Thanks for contacting us. I’m sorry your and Mr. J's journey from Manchester was disrupted by the severe weather conditions. I know how upsetting it must have been for you when your flight was cancelled, especially as we were unable to rebook you until the 13 December.
The heavy snowfall and low air temperatures meant many of our aircraft needed to be de-iced before being allowed to take off, causing delays to the departure time of many of our flights. In addition, due to the low visibility on the runway, Air Traffic Control reduced the number of aircraft allowed to take off and land, causing both cancellations and diversions to other airports. We don’t underestimate the inconvenience this must have caused you and I’m so sorry we weren’t able to get you to your destination as scheduled.
I understand you’re out of pocket as a result of the cancellation of your flight and I’m happy to arrange a bank transfer or the hotel cost for 1610 SEK.
I know you’ll be disappointed we’re unable to cover the cost of alternative flights booked with SAS for XXX SEK and the train ticket for YYY SEK. If your flight is cancelled, in accordance with EU legislation, the operating carrier has an obligation to either rebook the customer free of charge to the next available flight or to offer a full refund of their ticket. Any expenses incurred as a direct result of a delay or cancellation, such as refreshments and hotel costs until such time your flight departs, would be covered by the airline. This however, does not include any alternative transport the passenger chooses to arrange themselves, either with another airline or any other form of transport. For reimbursement of your SAS and train tickets, you would need to contact your travel insurance company. If you require any documentation to back any claim, I’d be more than happy to provide it.
A refund of the unused parts of your tickets have already been arranged and paid directly back to the original form of payment.
I'm afraid your claim for EU compensation has been refused because BA0820 on 11 December was cancelled because of adverse weather conditions which prevented the aircraft operating as scheduled. Under EU legislation, I’m afraid we’re not liable for a compensation payment in this situation.
On the day you were due to travel, there were restrictions in place affecting the aircraft coming in and out of London Heathrow, which was a direct result of the severe weather conditions. I’m afraid this was out of our control and caused unforeseen disruption.
We take all reasonable measures to avoid cancelling a flight and we always consider if there are any operational options available before we make a decision. We’re very sorry the cancellation was necessary in this case.

Thanks for coming back to us about your claim. You’re clearly unhappy with our response and I understand why, but hopefully I can explain our position to you below.
Whenever a flight is delayed or cancelled, it’s the airlines’ obligation to assist the passenger with rescheduling and rerouting them to their intended destination under comparable transport conditions. This means on the next available flight and with the same airline. If the passenger decides not to fly with us anymore and books a separate ticket with a different airline, or any other means of transport, the Contract of Carriage between us and the passenger is terminated and we can’t be held liable for those extra costs.
I’m afraid this means that as you chose not to fly with us at all but booked alternative travel through another airline, we would no longer be responsible for the expenses you had as a result of your original flight being cancelled.
Again, if you have travel insurance, you may be able to make a claim through your policy and we will be happy to provide documentation to support this where possible. Please use the blue link below to let me know if this is something you need
