Due to a relative’s clients, I came into a lot of new Tumi Alpha cabin baggage that probably will just sit around collecting dust until visitors need to use them on excursions. I like Tumi Alpha series ballistic nylon luggage despite the weight, but I find airlines to be getting more and more annoying about cabin baggage weight than they used to be and thus I have to go for lighter, less attractive cabin bags than my older and newer Tumi cabin baggage items. So I choose to go for cabin baggage that is so suitable for a homeless bag lady that thieves would skip them: beat-up Samsonite you think came from unauthorized dumpster diving at the återvinningstation. Or my favorite: discontinued Oakley cabin baggage that has flown at least 2 million miles since being picked up at an outlet store near ONT airport in California some 15 years ago or so and only failed to visit Africa and Antarctica amongst the continents.
My most precious Rimowa cabin baggage items now primarily remain for use on trains or when flying mainline flights operated by US airlines. For other flights, I have been using this expandable travel backpack and so have some of my travel companions:
The Duchamp expandable travel backpacks were being dumped via discount retailers at c. $40-50 each, and they have been great so far. But it’s still to be seen how well they hold up over longer term use.
