A message from the United Airlines pilot, Captain Halliday, whose 747 was at the end of the runway at SFO and next for takeoff when Asiana Airlines crashed:
"Hey friends. As most of you know I was in the cockpit of the 747 you've all seen near the end of the runway during the Asiana Flight 214 incident yesterday. I was approximately 300' from the impact area. Some of you even heard my voice on a radio transmission. Yes, it was me. Every person on the left side of my aircraft that was looking out the window saw this accident unfold right before their eyes. As gnarly as this was I want to mention a particular group of people who were real heroes yesterday; Flight attendants. Both on the accident aircraft and less obviously on my aircraft. The flight attendants on the Asiana Aircraft got nearly all of the people off the airplane, most with minor or no injuries. This is simply amazing to me after the mayhem I witnessed.
The less obvious heroes, the flight attendants on MY flight, provided calming comfort to over 200 people (we had a very light load) and kept the passengers informed and orderly during the three hours we sat on the taxiway in full view of a disaster. I hear complaints about United Airlines' flight attendants occasionally. Yes, they have been around longer than the newer upstart airline stews, so yes they are older, and yes they are less likely to take crap from some idiot. But I can tell you from firsthand experience yesterday, this group was outstanding. A couple of them went to some of our unaccompanied minor children travelling alone with their cell phones to call their parents to tell them they were OK. They were sensitive to younger and nervous passengers and lowered their shades and diverted their attention to their books, gameboys, iPads, etc. They kept the entire mood of the cabin calm and reassured. The next time I hear a tale or complaint about some lame terrible experience with a United flight attendant, that person can expect a damn earful from me. What I saw yesterday was remarkable and a testament to how valuable EVERY flight crew member is. Experience MATTERS, my friends. Think about it the next time you brag about your cheap airline ticket."
