27 Best Premium Economy Airline Cabins

Best Premium Economy Airlines 2024

Premium Economy was first introduced in 1991 - by EVA Air - and was soon adopted by most of the world's major airlines. It was created as a bridge between economy and Business Class. It offers passengers better perks, points and legroom than economy and is ideal for cost-conscious passengers - especially families - on longer haul routes.

Over time, as airlines drop First Class, Premium Economy has become the "middle” cabin and has taken on greater importance. Better cuisine, inflight entertainment and enhanced amenity kits are being offered - making it a much more luxurious experience than in the past. You still will not have use of a dedicated lounge or amazing suites that are available only to First and Business Class passengers but speedier boarding always helps!

The BusinessClass.com guide to 27 airlines with great Premium Economy cabins:

How does Premium Economy compare to Business Class?

While Premium Economy class flights offer more spacious seating and enhanced amenities than the standard Economy class, they don't match the luxury and privacy offered in Business Class, where passengers receive flat-bed seats, gourmet dining options, exclusive lounges, and superior personal service.

Can I earn frequent flyer miles when flying premium economy?

Yes, passengers flying in Premium Economy can earn frequent flyer miles. The exact number of miles accrued typically depends on the distance flown and the airline's specific loyalty program policies. Many programs offer a higher earning rate for Premium Economy than standard Economy Class flights, but typically less than Business Class flights.

Where is the best place to sit in Premium Economy?

The best place to sit depends on personal preference. Bulkhead seats can be advantageous for those prioritising legroom as they typically offer more space and sometimes come with full leg rests rather than footrests. However, these seats may be near lavatories or galleys, which could experience more foot traffic and, therefore, be less restful. Dedicated Premium Economy cabins are frequently relatively small and intimate in any event. Always consult the aircraft seat plan for more information.

Can you sleep in Premium Economy?

The seats in this class typically have a greater recline and more legroom than those in standard Economy, making it easier to get comfortable. Add upgraded amenities such as larger pillows and blankets, extendable footrests and travel kits with eye masks and ear plugs, and it would be possible to facilitate sleep. However, this could not be compared to the comfort of a lie-flat bed in Business or First Class.
