Hotel Raphaël

Hotel Raphaël

Hotel Raphaël was built in 1925 in the heart of the “roaring twenties”, located right in the heart of the 16th arrondissement behind an ornate, sculptured exterior, close to the Arc de Triomphe and the bustling shops and restaurants of the Champs-Elysées. A beautifully maintained, traditional hotel, it still has the feel of the Belle Epoque with gleaming wooden panelling, artworks, antiques and hand painted murals: a glamorous abode with a grand staircase, ornate ceilings, an original wrought-iron lift and classic black and white marble chequerboard flooring. It will come as no surprise that Cary Grant, Steve McQueen and Audrey Hepburn used to frequent the property as it oozes that sort of by-gone age, time-honed charm and even John Malkovich is a fan, it seems. There are just 83 rooms and suites spread out over seven floors at the property, serviced by a long-term staff welcoming back regulars warmly time after time and offering a consistency often lacking at other hotels. The rooms also hark back to times gone by, with furnishings in the style of Louis XV-XVI; large wardrobes; chandeliers; hand-painted murals; patterned wallpaper; panelling; swagged curtains and antiques. Enjoying an enduring appeal, room sizes are slightly larger than other hotels, ranging from 25 square metres for the entry level rooms to 40 square metres for the Boudoir Room with a terrace overlooking the Eiffel Tower. With the high ceilings, the extravagant décor, antiques and sumptuous fabrics, each suite feels like it belongs in a château, with the Arc de Triomphe Terrace Suite in particular offering fabulous patio views over the monument, one of the larger suites with a 65 square metre footprint.

Main entrance of hotel raphael paris
Hotel Raphaël

The top suite of course is the Presidential offering 135 square metres of living room overlooking the Eiffel Tower, a fantasy landscape mural working as a bed headboard, crystal chandeliers, Directoire style furnishings and tiled bathrooms, one of three in the suite. When it comes to wining and dining, the all-day dining Restaurant is traditionally elegant with huge windows looking out onto Paris and muralled panels depicting landscapes and Romanesque images. When the weather turns fine, The Rooftop comes into play, probably the most contemporary space in the entire hotel with epic views looking out over Paris and filled to the brim with scented flowers and planting for all day snacking. The wood panelled English Bar, by way of contrast, has a more club like appeal, perfect for light bites, cocktails or a tipple or three. To be honest, this hotel is like a time capsule, taking us back to a gentler age and allowing us a glimpse of the past.

Hôtel Molitor Paris – MGallery is located in the 16th arrondissement of Paris, close to the Bois de Boulogne and the Jardin des Serres d’Auteuil – perfect for taking the air - with the Stade Roland Garros nearby, the French Open held there a lure for tennis addicts, Le Parc des Princes for soccer fans, whilst for culture buffs, the Musée Rodin is also in the vicinity. Architect Jean-Philippe Nuel was tasked with making these baths fit for the modern era, faithfully recreating the historic areas of the property including a heated indoor winter pool housed beneath a towering glass roof whilst the hotel completely surrounds a second larger pool – the 46-metre heated outdoor summer pool. These are just some of the impressive facilities of the property which boasts 117 contemporary guest rooms and seven suites, ranging in size from a cosy 22 square metres for the entry level Classic Rooms up to the apartment feel of the 60 square metre Grand Suite. Sofitel Paris Le Faubourg

Sofitel Paris Le Faubourg enjoys an enviable location in the eighth arrondissement, equally close to historic Paris with the Place de la Concorde, the Jardins des Tuileries and Le Louvre and to the fashion boutiques, shops and department stores in and around Rue du Faubourg Saint Honoré. Once the home of France’s Marie Claire magazine, it might come as no surprise therefore that the interior designer, Didier Gomez, has given the hotel, housed within two elegant 18th and 19th century townhouses, a distinct haute couture appeal. There are 148 rooms and suites ranging in size from 20 square metres for the Superior up to 30 square metres for the premium luxury room and these have been given Gomez’s stamp with a glamorous, timeless feel mixing a light seascape colour palette and sumptuous fabrics with large black and white images, retro mirrors and just a touch of crystal. Toiletries of course are by Balmain, naturellement. Moving up to the suites, the colour schemes are more individual, ranging from the 35 square metre Junior Suite overlooking the garden, to the über cool 40 square metre Collection Suite with modern and antique pieces mixed together. The two bedroom 66 square metre Faubourg Site enjoys a vintage appeal with its oversized black and white Cecil Beaton fashion imagery and the same seaside colours mixed with gold and yellow to great effect. The 100 square metre Couture Apartment up in the eaves of the hotel has a more monochrome palette and a distinctly modern style with facilities including a large Master Suite and living room, a Hammam, Jacuzzi, dining room, home cinema and office – with captivating views out over the city.

Le Bar du Faubourg meanwhile is a fashionista’s dream, mixing leather wing back chairs with antique sofas and black and white fashion photos hung beside the fireplace over wood panelled walls, serving a light menu throughout the day and tapas in the evening. For those who like to see and be seen, there is also the Faubourg Terraces at the front of the hotel.

Terrace at hotel balzac
Hôtel Balzac

Hôtel Balzac

Hôtel Balzac, as the name might suggest, was once home to French novelist, Honoré de Balzac who acquired the property in 1846 and spent his last days in the house. Suitably located on rue Balzac and originally built for the director of the Paris Opera, this historic property, now a hotel, has kept a collection of antique books as well as lithographs in homage to the late author – a natural draw for lovers of French literature and La Comédie Humaine – and part of the hotel’s decoration. Located just off the Champs-Elysées, close to the Arc de Triomphe, Avenue Montaigne and Avenue George V at the heart of the City of Light, the property blends the old with the new in a Parisian neo-classical style, immediately evident from the showstopper opulence of the public areas – crystal chandeliers and lamps, sumptuous fabrics, swagged and tasselled curtains, luxury Persian rugs, Louis XIV antique furnishings and fragrant, elegant flower arrangements.

The style, designed by Anne-Marie Sabatier, continues with the 57 guest rooms and 12 suites with some rooms having views out over the Eiffel Tower, others over the rooftops of the city. Most have canopy beds, many enjoy a vibrant colour palette of either teal, russet or mauve, still more have a more neutral palette and all feature state of the art technology and marble bathrooms. Room sizes range from the cosy single 15 square metres, doubling in size when you reach the Executive Room category. The 35 square metre Junior Suites have wooden entryways, dressing rooms and marble bathrooms with clawfoot baths and separate walk-in showers whilst the full Suites offer 45 square metres of space with large sitting rooms with dining areas, separate bedrooms and if required, the corner suites can interconnect with deluxe rooms to accommodate up to five adults easily. The grandest accommodation, of course, is the 70 square metre Presidential Suite located on the hotel’s top floor and the larger 95 square metre Royal Suite offering a space of immense period charm with staggering views out over Paris. When it comes to dining, there is a treat in store as the property hosts three-star Michelin chef Pierre Gagnaire’s restaurant showcasing modern French cuisine which nods back in tribute and technique to the past. Early booking is highly recommended, and the restaurant closes over the weekend. Alternatively, try Hotel Balzac’s Bar & Lounge, sited at the hotel’s heart and enjoying sunlight courtesy of a glass-ceilinged atrium. Plum and tangerine-coloured comfortable sofas and tables offers the perfect rendezvous for relaxed daytime dining whilst the sleek long black granite bar to the side of the lounge hits the spot for a glass of wine, some fine spirits or cocktail or two.

Main entrance of la tremoille hotel paris
La Trémoille Hotel

La Trémoille Hotel

La Trémoille, one of Paris’ best-known traditional hotels, is housed behind a 19th century Haussmanian façade, restored in 2002 to its original splendour and since that time, has proudly sported resplendent wrought iron balconies, topped by deep blue awnings, with green, draped planting on the lower two floors. Located on a quiet street in the eighth arrondissement, in the heart of Paris’ “Golden Triangle” of the Champs-Elysées, Avenue Montaigne and Avenue George V the hotel is close to the Arc de Triomphe and the Eiffel Tower as well as the Musée Yves Saint Laurent and La Galerie Dior for lovers of fashion.  Originally built as a grand private residence, (the central grand staircase remaining to give a hint of what it must once have looked like), the building became a hotel in 1923 and during the 1960s, became a home away from home for both Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington, both of whom are remembered with old black and white photographic portraits.

La Trémoille Hotel

There are 93 rooms and suites here, all featuring a rather unique touch - a private “hatch” compartment linking the room to the hotel corridor enabling laundry and room service to be delivered directly inside. Rooms enjoy high ceilings, large windows, marble bathrooms and a curtained backdrop to the bed, becoming the centrepiece of each room. Colours are subtle and rooms are not overfilled with detail, having more of a 1930’s clean lined feel which complements the original features and range in size from 31 to 104 square metres. The suites are located on the upper floors with both dining and living areas as well as furnished balconies so you can eat your breakfast whilst listening to the heartbeat of the city. For relaxation, there is a spa with a state-of-the-art fitness room, a relaxing sauna and invigorating jet showers with facial and body treatments available in collaboration with partner ZEAL Cosmetics and undertaken in either a treatment room or in-room. At the time of writing, the restaurant and bar were currently under renovation and closed, meals provided via room service.

Le Narcisse Blanc Hôtel & Spa

Le Narcisse Blanc Hôtel & Spa is an elegant little property, located on the Left Bank in the seventh arrondissement, close to the Musée d’Orsay, Les Invalides and the Musée Rodin. Named for the Belle Epoque dancer Cléo de Mérode who became a muse to Klimt, Lautrec and Proust with her portraits seen throughout the property, the design for the 30 guest rooms and seven suites is inspired by her timeless femininity and beauty, with sleek clean lines, a satisfying, sophisticated simplicity and a neutral, multi-textured colour palette contrasting with the black marble and white tilled bathrooms. A former office building just a 15 minute walk from the Eiffel Tower, some of the guest rooms have furnished landscaped terraces or wrought iron balconies, others have marble fireplaces and overlook the small, courtyard garden or a Parisian side street but all share a commonality of tone and feel – at once nodding to an historic Parisian style whilst offering a contemporary, chic space in warm neutral tones of pinks, pastels and beiges.

Hotel Regina Louvre

Hotel Regina Louvre

Hotel Regina Louvre is an historic, traditional property located in the heart of historic Paris, close to the Jardins des Tuileries, Le Louvre, the Musee d’Orsay and Notre Dame. Remaining in the same family since it opened in 1900 for the Paris Exposition Universelle, it was converted into a belle epoque hotel from a residential building which kept the original façade with its existing tall archways. This was where Antoine de Pluvinel, squire for Kings Henri III and IV, once had his riding school. Decorated by the master designers of the day, expect to find scrollwork, bas reliefs, mosaics, stained-glass windows, carved wooden window frames and decorative panelling with crystal chandeliers and wall lights created exclusively for the property. Said to be the last example of an Art Nouveau hotel in the capital with the last remaining revolving entrance, today’s property blends the traditional Louis XV styling with a touch of the contemporary. There are 98 individually decorated guest rooms including 32 suites – no two are alike – with high ceilings, draped curtains with some enjoying floor to ceiling windows overlooking the Eiffel Tower whilst others look out over the palace that is Le Louvre. Guest rooms are sized at a generous 20 – 50 square metres over five categories whilst the suites range from 40 square metres for the entry level Junior Suite, to 50 square metres for the Eiffel Tower Suite with amazing views of the attraction, up to 110 square metres for the top of the line three-bedroom Parisian Suites up on the seventh floor in the rafters.

These enjoy sweeping views out over Paris from their terraces and can easily accommodate a family of up to seven. A backdrop for many a film – including Mission Impossible 5 and The Bourne Identity - the gilt Joan of Arc statue in front of the entrance to the property on the Place des Pyramides is instantly recognisable. For health and fitness, the property has a 70 square metre wellness centre with a gym offering a selection of TechnoGym equipment, a Hamman and a sauna whilst there are ample choices for jogging or walking close to the hotel. When it comes to wining and dining, a Parisian menu is served during clement months in the Courtyard Garden Terrace, a pretty, landscaped oasis in the heart of the hotel or in the English Bar. Here, panelled wooden walls and ornate carved ceilings and etched windows with swirling designs contrast with crimson velvet armchairs and comfortable sofas to enjoy an all-day dining menu, a cocktail or two or some fine spirits. Soft mood lighting lends the Bar a feel of Victorian England so it should come as no surprise that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle once frequented this establishment. The concierge can also make recommendations for any number of cafés, bistros and restaurants in the close vicinity. FYI, Hotel Regina Louvre was also where the International Federation of the Red Cross and the Red Crescent Societies were founded in 1919, after the First World War.
