Svart – The world’s first energy-positive hotel

A new world-class luxury hotel is planned to open north of the Arctic Circle in Norway, next to Norway’s largest glacier. BusinessClass takes a closer look at this astonishing environmentally-friendly luxury hotel.

Located deep inside of the Norwegian unspoiled nature, right beside the Svartisen Glacier and in Meløy municipality, Svart (translates to Black) will be a gamechanger for sustainability. The renowned Norwegian architectural firm Snøhetta is behind the remarkable design. Inspired by the local coastal building tradition, the building is lifted by wooden beams. The circular shape provides panoramic views of the fjord, creating an experience for the guests of living close to nature.

An important element is its commitment to the environment. This building is designed to have the highest energy efficiency standards in the northern hemisphere. The hotel will consume 85% less energy than other equivalent hotels of its size, and it will become the world’s first energy-positive hotel.

The 1,000 m2 spa and wellness area include treatment rooms, relaxation area, swimming pools and a yoga studio. Treatments and therapies ranges from common massage and facial treatments – using locally-sourced and sustainable ingredients – to cryotherapy. Additionally, guests can enjoy adventurous activities and experiences, such as ice climbing on the glacier to yoga in the midnight sun.
