Location

Perched high above Zürich, The Dolder Grand stands as a testament to Swiss hospitality since its establishment in 1899. After a transformative renovation by Foster + Partners, the hotel reopened in 2008, blending historic grandeur with sleek modernity across 175 rooms and suites—including 60 expansive suites that epitomize refined comfort. Guests are spoiled for choice with four distinct culinary venues, including the acclaimed two Michelin-starred The Restaurant led by Heiko Nieder, and the vibrant all-day Saltz restaurant.

Renowned for its breathtaking vistas across Zürich, Lake Zürich, and the distant Alps, The Dolder Grand is a sanctuary for those seeking both relaxation and rejuvenation. The Spa—spanning an impressive 4,000 square metres—offers gender-specific facilities such as saunas, cold and aroma pools, steam rooms, a Kotatsu footbath, solarium, and tranquil relaxation zones. The Aqua Zone features a heated pool, indoor/outdoor whirlpools, sanarium, Japanese-inspired Sunaburo sand bath, Snow Paradise, meditation and workout studios, and a comprehensive fitness centre. The spa’s 18 treatment rooms and two exclusive spa suites provide a curated menu of therapies and medical wellness options, including immune support, skin rejuvenation, and holistic health coaching.

The hotel’s outdoor offerings are equally robust, with forest trails, five premium clay tennis courts, a nine-hole golf course, driving range, minigolf, and the popular public Dolder Bad swimming pool. Winter guests can enjoy skating on the vast Dolder Kunsteisbahn, one of Europe’s largest open-air ice rinks.

Art enthusiasts will be enthralled by over 120 pieces from luminaries such as Salvador Dalí, Fernando Botero, Jean Tinguely, and Joan Miró, all accessible via a dedicated Art iPad guide for a bespoke cultural journey.

Set atop the tranquil Adlisberg Hill, The Dolder Grand commands a privileged position just two kilometres—and 200 metres in elevation—above central Zürich. The hotel is easily accessible from Zürich Airport in about 25 minutes by car or via the scenic Dolderbahn rack railway, whose upper station is just steps from the hotel’s main entrance. Encompassing 42,000 square metres of lush grounds, the property feels both secluded and connected.

Guests benefit from a six-minute drive to Zürich’s bustling city centre, ample on-site parking for 240 vehicles, a regular shuttle service, and complimentary e-bikes for exploring the city or nearby forests. This rare combination of panoramic views, accessibility, and natural beauty makes The Dolder Grand a standout urban resort in Switzerland.

The original historic structure, enhanced by Foster + Partners’ thoughtfully crafted Spa and Golf wings, offers guests a choice between timeless tradition and architectural innovation.

The Kids Room, children’s menus, and thoughtful welcome gifts ensure younger guests feel at home. The 44 Junior Suites (53–64 sqm) are split between the classic main building and the contemporary wings, all equipped with whirlpool bathtubs and separate showers. Junior Suites Grand promise panoramic city and mountain views, while Junior Suites Deluxe feature lake-facing balconies.

Signature suites elevate the experience with private butler service, fireplaces, and bespoke furnishings. All accommodations prioritize privacy, comfort, and a seamless blend of old-world charm and cutting-edge luxury, continually earning accolades from global travel authorities.

Style

The Dolder Grand’s extensive facilities are anchored by its renowned spa, which has repeatedly earned accolades as one of Europe’s finest wellness destinations. Spanning 4,000 square metres, the spa features distinct areas for men and women, offering saunas, steam baths, aroma pools, Japanese-style kotatsu footbaths, relaxation zones, and sunbeds. Guests can unwind in the inviting Aqua Zone with its 25-metre pool, indoor and outdoor whirlpools, sanarium, and the unique Sunaburo sand bath and Snow Paradise. Meditation and movement studios, a comprehensive gym, and complimentary group fitness classes round out the offerings, alongside 18 treatment rooms and two spa suites for bespoke therapies.

Additional recreational choices include woodland hiking, five championship-standard clay tennis courts, a nine-hole golf course, driving range, mini-golf, and the Dolder Bad public pool. In the colder months, the celebrated Dolder Kunsteisbahn ice rink—one of the continent’s largest—offers a quintessential Swiss winter experience.

Art is interwoven throughout the property, with over 120 museum-quality pieces viewable via self-guided iPad tours. Major works from Salvador Dalí, Fernando Botero, Joan Miró, Jean Tinguely, and Takashi Murakami are displayed in both public and private spaces. The hotel’s architectural synergy of historic and contemporary elements, masterminded by Foster + Partners, is itself a work of art, seamlessly integrating the original structure with the Spa and Golf wings.

Restaurants & Bars

Dating back to its original 1899 construction by Jacques Gros, The Dolder Grand underwent a visionary transformation in the early 2000s, doubling its scale while meticulously preserving its Belle Époque essence. All later additions not part of the original design were removed, and the historic building was structurally reinforced and complemented by two organically curved new wings. These wings, draped in aluminum panels with tree motifs, harmonize with the surrounding forest and echo the color palette of the main building, creating a seamless fusion of old and new under the creative direction of Sir Norman Foster.

Redefining Zürich’s luxury hotel landscape, the renovation set a new benchmark for urban resorts in Switzerland, blending architectural bravery with lasting elegance. The Dolder Grand’s innovative spirit continues to shine: it was Switzerland’s first luxury hotel to accept Bitcoin payments, and it curates its own Studio 8032 music channel on Spotify, keeping the guest experience fresh and relevant in 2025.

Sustainability

The Dolder Grand’s gastronomic offerings are as diverse as they are exceptional. The hotel features four distinct venues: the two Michelin-starred The Restaurant, the vibrant Saltz for all-day dining, The Lobby for afternoon tea and snacks, and The Bar for signature cocktails and light fare.

Helmed by Heiko Nieder, The Restaurant continues to set the standard for innovative fine dining, holding 19 GaultMillau points and two Michelin stars. The 47-seat dining room delights with inventive flavor combinations—think Brittany lobster paired with seasonal fruits or desserts that surprise with vegetable infusions. Menus include amuse-bouche tastings at lunch, multi-course gourmet dinners, and dedicated vegetarian options. The wine program is outstanding, with more than 500 selections—including 30 champagnes, 100 whites, and 250 reds—housed in a custom wine cube. Guests may also dine in the elegant Private Dining Room or on the terrace with panoramic views.

Saltz, designed by Rolf Sachs, balances playful design with a sophisticated menu rooted in Swiss ingredients. Weekend brunches—accompanied by live DJ sets—are a local highlight, especially when served on the sun-drenched terrace. The Saltz Bar is a favorite for creative cocktails and artisanal bites.

The Lobby, with its ornate ceiling and historic fireplace, is the go-to for house-made pastries, light snacks, and weekly live music. Afternoon Tea is a winter tradition, while The Bar transforms each evening with inventive mixology, a resident DJ, and dazzling Swarovski lighting that bridges classic and contemporary aesthetics.

For lovers of Middle Eastern cuisine, Asly Oriental Cuisine brings a curated selection of mezze and signature dishes to Saltz, The Lobby, and in-room dining, ensuring a global culinary journey without leaving the hotel.

The Dolder Grand’s annual Epicure festival, launched in 2014, remains a highlight on the international gastronomic calendar, drawing celebrated guest chefs for a week of culinary artistry and innovation.

What We Love

The Dolder Grand’s 2004 renewal ushered in a comprehensive sustainability strategy, leveraging cutting-edge building management systems for energy efficiency—from smart lighting controls to automated ventilation based on occupancy and window sensors. Locally sourced, eco-friendly construction materials further reduced the hotel’s carbon footprint.

Water conservation is prioritized through rainwater collection and greywater treatment systems, which supply non-potable needs and minimize consumption. The building utilizes both natural and mechanical ventilation, optimizing energy use and ensuring adaptability to climate shifts.

Thermal insulation and triple-glazed windows enhance the building’s energy profile, while a ground-source heat pump delivers approximately 25% of heating and cooling requirements. All remaining electricity comes from 100% Swiss hydro power, ensuring operations are carbon neutral. Since expanding, the hotel has cut energy use by 50% per square metre, and the 2020 transition to LED lighting has further improved efficiency sevenfold.

All linens are EU-sourced, high-quality cotton and linen. Since 2016, used guest soaps are donated to SapoCycle for recycling and redistribution to families in need. The arrival process is now fully digital, reducing paper waste, and the hotel uses potted plants rather than cut flowers. Candles are recycled for future use.

Restaurant sourcing emphasizes local, seasonal ingredients, eliminating single-use plastics and serving breakfast in portioned dishes to combat food waste. The spa provides water in reusable bottles and works with sustainable skincare partners like Dr Burgener and Amala, while wellness wear is sourced from Back Label, a B-Corp certified, toxic-free Italian brand.

The Dolder Grand holds EarthCheck Silver Certification and is a NOW Sustainability member, with the highest Swisstainable rating from Switzerland Tourism. The "Cause We Care" initiative empowers guests to contribute to climate action, and the hotel supports reforestation and CO2 reduction projects in Madagascar, reflecting a holistic approach to responsible luxury travel in 2025.
