Hi, it's the first time for me looking for an award trip and I'm a bit confused even after reading a lot of threads and searching around. So I really need your help.

  1. Varifrån vill du börja din resa? Arlanda
  2. Var är din destination? Orlando, USA
  3. Typ av resa (enkel eller tur och retur)? T/R
  4. När vill/behöver du resa ut? 30 Oktober
  5. När vill/behöver du komma hem? 7 November
  6. Hur länge vill du vara borta?
  7. Hur många personer som skall resa? 2 adults and 2 children (11 and 6 years old)
  8. I vilken kabinklass?
    • Business on long haul, ok Economy on short
  9. Med vilka flygbolag vill du flyga med? Star Alliance
  10. Vad är din budget? (per person) 220.000 Eurobonus and 2x Amex voucher

  11. Vad är det viktigaste för dig? at least 60-80 minutes when changing flights

  12. Vill du stanna annanstans utöver destinationen? if possible, a stop over in New York on the way back, otherwise the return can be also on 5th of November
Below some examples from Google Flights
route 1
route 2

Hi, few concerns/issues to consider at first:
A) 4 pax in business - a bit tricky to find but can be achieved on Swiss and Turkish (for example).
B) Budget - No discount given on children on *A flights - following flying business (which looks at the longhaul leg) would be at 260.000 EBB (130.000EBB/P but 2* Amex vouchers). Your budget seem to be 220.000 EBB in total?
C) SAS only begin resuming flights on Oct. 30 but since you are looking at autumn break the bonus tickets are long gone. However, SAS can of course release additional tickets closer to departure date but unlikely since autumn break... And.. SAS only fly to Miami.
D) Stopover is not possible for award tickets - longest possible layover is 24h.

So what you could look at -
Option 1
- Try to find award tickets with SAS to Chicago (or NYC or Boston) with SAS and then pay for the domestic onward travel. This way you can choose how long stopover you want too. However, still tricky to find 4 pax in business, especially during autumn break. Easiest to find to Boston or Chicago though. If you want to spit then 1 adult + 1 child in business and 1 adult+1child in premium eco. This would also fit into your budget.
Option 1b
- You can also elaborate on cost if using one 2-4-1 for one adult and child discount and then pay pay for the additional 2 pax. However - don't put your children to one booking and you and mrs. to the other in case of late changes by aircompany etc. etc....

Option 2
If you would have 260.000 EBB you could do a semi-world tour and opt for Turkish Airlines to Miami in business - for the 4 of you.
There are available award tickets for 4 pax outbound either Oct 28 or Oct 29 and inbound a week later. Long flights with long layovers, but in business class which is an experience in itself.. Also, TA offers free stopover but that only seems applicable for travelling to USA and not from (and to Sweden)
Best part of the journey: Stopover in Istanbul (turkishairlines.com) I'm sure other people here in the forum has additional knowledge about this.

Option 3
You can also try to find flights with Air Canada and United.

Finally, please note that it is hurricane season in Florida until Dec. 1 - usually worse around Miami but just wanted to highlight that option too. If you could consider going easter break 2022 instead I would opt grabbing premium plus tickets for the SAS flights to Miami once they are released...

Welcome and let's see what we can find. First we have a tricky situation with your points:
Star Alliance-poängtabell – vart du kan resa med dina poäng | SAS

Since your 11 and 6 year old will be treated as adults when flying with Star Alliance you will need 260,000 points with two vouchers to fly in Business. Next challenge on your wish list, "stopover" is normally longer than 24 hours and it's not permissible on award tickets. A "layover" not exceeding 24 hours (e.g. 23:59) is permissible.

Outbound to Orlando 30 October
Stockholm, SE (ARN) to Frankfurt, DE (FRA)
9:00 - 11:15 (2h 15m)
SK 635 | Airbus A320
Operated By Scandinavian Airlines

Frankfurt, DE (FRA) to Washington, DC, US (IAD)
17:10 - 20:15 (9h 5m)
UA 933 | Boeing 777-200

Washington, DC, US (IAD) to Orlando, FL, US (MCO)
22:09 - 0:18 (2h 9m)
UA 689 | Boeing 737-800

NOTE 1: long transit in FRA
NOTE 2: IAD-MCO is United Economy

Return from New York 7 November
New York/Newark, NJ, US (EWR) to Brussels, BE (BRU)
19:00 - 8:05 (7h 5m)
UA 999 | Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner
Depart EWR: Sun, Nov 7
Arrive BRU: Mon, Nov 8

Brussels, BE (BRU) to Stockholm, SE (ARN)
10:00 - 12:10 (2h 10m)
SK 590 | Airbus A320
Operated By Sas Ireland

Either way, your other options are:
You need to get 40,000 more points quickly
Search only for SAS to their gateways and buy separate tickets. Chicago does have seats for 4 in Plus around your dates.

Thanks for the quick response both of you!

The stopover rule, now I know ;)

I know the autumn break is hard but I find myself in the situation where, like a lot of people here in the forum, one of the voucher is gone end of February.

How is working if I want to search for availability in Swiss or Turkish? Directly on their websites?

United.com is your go to tool. Will show both. You are still short on points for what you want to do,

Yes I know, will have to think to some alternative. As you said, get 40K more points quickly or consider SAS on the long haul since they are discounting children

Air Canada homepage quite comprehensive as well - go to "Aeroplane" and search away - either direct or per leg :)

When you search on flights to Orlando, and if going domestically - pls note you can search on two airports in Orlando - MCO (the usual one) and SFB (mainly used for domestic flights). Also, Tampa is some 1.5hr car drive away, and Miami (MIA) and Fort Lauderdale is just some 3.5hrs easy drive via the Turnpike. Note: Key West however is a rather long 5hr drive up to Miami with traffic jams over the w/e why you might want to avoid going there since only a week's holiday.
Another option would be flying to one destination and out from another - in that way you increase your hit-ratio and get to see some other parts of Florida as well. :D

Sorry for the many different comments - but you might want to consider the risk in finding an awards trip to the US (i.e. anywhere in the US) and then pay for the domestic tickets given the ongoing situation and cancelled/postponed flights....

Thanks, all very useful info!

Question: what happen if you book a bonus trip with Amex voucher and then you are forced to cancel it? Points are back if I'm not mistaken, voucher?

ok, found the info :)
