1. Ethiopian Business Class 7/10
Travelled Kigali-Addis 8th June 2018 at 02 a.m. on a small B737-700. Upgraded successfully from economy class by putting my modest bid through their homepage. Check-in was very lengthy as they could not issue the second boarding pass when I was upgraded on the first sector. I could not accept it and stood at the counter almost ½ hour before the second BP came out. Worth waiting for compared to waiting at a transfer counter in ADD to get it. It eventually went through and I then enjoyed the lounge access in KGL and good service on board in the four rows of business class (cabin ½ full). I was disappointed that they only served breakfast as I needed dinner. But I spotted from the menu card the dinner served on the incoming flight. I then managed to secure my favourite dinner from that menu, despite it was not on offer and a few hours old, but reheated. Pre-departure champagne brut (“Lallier”) was fine. FAs attentive. Seats extremely well bolstered. Good product.

2. Ethiopian Economy Class 9/10
Transited in Addis on my way to Khartoum on 8th June 2018. The airport (T2) is overcrowded, messy, and queues everywhere. Boarding tedious and waiting for ½-1 hour for the bus in overcrowded narrow room at Gate 13. We became >½ hours late departing, but as the plane was full it was almost excusable. As the pax-load was full and the aircraft was a smaller B737-800 they were seizing and checking in hand-luggage for a lot of overloaded passengers, inclusive of myself. I argued that I need to go with my hand-luggage as I was only transiting in KRT and could not retrieve it easily without a visa to Sudan. After some discussion they eventually allowed my two pieces to pass to be taken on board. On board I had one of my best economy flights for years: FAs were fit, well rested, effective, focused, and kind and expedite. Despite the flight was full and the duration were only 1½-2 hours, everything worked to perfection. Two hot meals offered, I chose a fish steak for breakfast. It was so good I had to inquire for one additional. Voila, in 6-8 seconds after I told this to the FA it was on my plate. Drinks offered were plenty including wine and beers. The brands were well selected and tasted very well for economy class. The FAs came around and asked if there were other requests they could assist with. They served us until we landed and there were no stops in service from kick-off till landing. They were so well groomed, professional, and neat. IFE was missing apart from radio/music access. The aircraft appeared new and in good condition despite being an old model. At arrival, two stairways were put up allowing for quick disembarking being taken by bus to the arrival area and then confronted with the harsh Sudanese immigration where huge patience is the strongest weapon to overcome the hurdles.

3. Flydubai Business Class 9/10
Travelled KRT-DXB on 8 June 2018 in a newish B737-800 aircraft in good condition and with fresh interior in bright colours. The business class section was 4 rows in a 2-2 configuration. Only 4 passengers in business made high level attendance from 2 FAs committed to business class. The separation to economy class was made by blue, semi-transparent plexi-glass which is the most elegant solution I have ever seen for this separation. Further, a rope prevented economy class passengers to encroach the business section. Flight was one hour delayed but not a big issue as I had 3 hours transit in DXB anyway. Lounge access granted in Khartoum to a modest, 3rd party, alcohol-deserted lounge used mainly by Emirates. My first time with Flydubai. When in business it almost appears to be a legacy carrier. Got the ticket during a campaign (FZ and CZ combined) for a fraction of the price of an economy class ticket. KRT is not an easy airport for transfers. They have very, very few transit passengers and there are no routines or clear modality for transitors apart from getting personal attention from officers who instantly seize your passport and let you wait clueless for hours. Onboard, FAs were very communicative and professional. One staff attendant came from Qatar Airways and claimed to be much happier with Flydubai. Food very tasty and 3 options of hot food given. I had all options and they were all very good and presented in a simpler way than for 5 star airlines – but that suited me well – simple and elegant concept. Drinks were of limited choices but good – inc. champagne and decent wines (only 2 wine options). Arrived at the remote Terminal 2 in Dubai but was transferred quickly to the main Terminal 1 for transit. IFE easy to operate with large touch screens. For the money spent (promotional ticket) I can only rate the experience as 10/10 minus 1 for the delay (though it did not affect me).

4.+ 5. China Southern Business Class 8/10
DXB-CAN-HAN on 9/6-2018. The first leg was longhaul and deserves 10/10 on a smart designed A330 business class cabin in a 1-2-1 configuration with very narrow aisles. FAs and care was excellent. FA extremely caring and humble but proactive throughout and even bowed and kneeled for the passengers. Champagne and wines resemble those offered at 5 start airlines. Food, menus, winelists, amenity kits, and IFE provided several options and were all good or even close to perfect. Highly responsive large touch screens supplied with with noise cancelling headsets. Ground staff were excellent at check-in and even at transit they were waiting for me to ensure that I did not miss my next connection which only had a 65 Minutes time slip. Both flights on time. Airport in Guangzhou is well functioning and quick to pass or transit in. Good lounges in Dubai and Guangzhou.

The 2nd leg only deserves 6/10 despite the FAs were faultless. The poor hardware on 2nd flight appeared with very cramped business seats in a single front row on an A319 aircraft. Food were modest and drinks were very limited (only beer and water). Seats were nice.I was the sole passenger in business and they have loaded 4 cans of beer for me (Warsteiner and Tsingtao). Food mediocre, but edible. Average score becomes below 9 due to the poor provision on the second leg. On a similar route with Cathay I have had much better experience – in economy class!

6. Vietnam Airlines Business class 8/10
Flew HAN-HUI on a Saturday evening of 9th June 2018. Check-in took only 30 seconds – this is typical for business travel on domestic routes (inc. of SkyTeam priority members). They announced by email in the morning a delay of 1 hour, which was fine for me and somehow not surprising on a Saturday evening. Lotus lounge in Hanoi T1 is huge and very well arranged and catered. Enjoyed quick WiFi and had a shower in one of 3 neat shower-cabins. The flight was on the usual A321 with 4 rows of biz-class. We were 6 persons in that cabin and the caretaking was fine. Newspapers provided. As usual on domestic, the food makes no sense to me, but it is levelled out by the drinks offering inclusive of not less than 4 brands of beers. I was recognised (remembered) by the staff which were extremely hospitable. The boarding was on a comfortable jet-bridge.
