The major chains (Hilton, Accor etc.) will almost universally accept Amex. For smaller hotels, I have found that I could almost always pay with Amex when booking via Hotels.com.
Of course this will vary depending on specific location and budget, but for me I've found that paying for hotels with Amex is not generally a problem in Thailand.
No, that’s not true. The 75% of the trip costs is exactly what it sounds like. The whole trip, not just what you can pay with Amex. The requirement is at 75% because there are always instances where you can’t pay with Amex like a taxi etc.
There’s probably a little leniency, but the terms are very clear on this.
I checked with AXA today and their answer was that you could withdraw cash with your Amex and pay with them. Then you are considered to have payed with Amex. But that is really expensive.
Next trip will be with my Mastercard, that is accepted everywhere as far as cards go.
