Mileage Run & Rebooking

In my quest to try to become Diamond, I have made a few flight purchases in which I am flying solely with the purpose of earning Level Points. I am wondering, in case any cancellation happens, and SAS rebooks me with another airline, what happens with the points I was supposed to earn in Eurobonus?

This question came to mind after seeing all the recent flights to India get cancelled from CPH and people get rebooked on airlines that are not even in the Sky Team: that means people will probably not even earn any points. What if they were flying just because they needed the points? Wouldn't be fair to lose the Diamond status in a situation like this, since it's a problem caused by SAS...

You contact customer support and ask for Original Routing Credit, to get points according to what you booked. Good luck!

Thank you. This is really useful information. Do we know how SAS usually treats these requests?

Downgrades now come to mind as well, what if, at the gate, I'm offered the option of either being downgraded or waiting for the next flight, in case of overbooking, if I accept the downgrade can I still get the points for the class I had originally purchased?

I've never had issues getting ORC with SAS. Standard procedure.

The general rule is if you buy a ticket with a reputable airline for the purpose of gaining points, that should be the least of your worry. Getting to your destination on time, in the cabin class you booked, on the airline you prefer... trickier. The points are easy.

As for downgrading, ORC should cover that too.

A warning, though, based on personal experience a few months ago. I was booked FRA-CPH-ARN with SAS in economy (with added biofuel) but due to a cancelled flight I was rebooked on FRA-ARN with LH on short notice. To get my extra bag, fast track and lounge access at FRA I showed my Senator card at the check desk, and they were nice enough to add it to the booking. This led to SAS denying me original routing credit, which I'm afraid looked completely in accordance with the T&C's, but I had not realised this was how it works. This was a very poor exchange for me, in particular since I had counted on those two segments towards one of the Christmas Calendar campaigns. So I ended up having to book an extra trip to OSL to get up to 10 segments.

Lesson: make sure no other card gets registered on a rebooking if you want to ask for ORC!

Oh this is interesting. It actually goes against what those blog posts mention. Those blog posts say that in cases like this (where companies belong to different alliances) it is very unlikely one company would know that the other company also credited points for you. I wonder how SAS found out about this.

This was after SkyTeam move? Very interesting!
In your case you did the LH registration before the flight for obvious reasons, so it might be a safer move to register for the points afterwards if you want to try double-dipping.

I have a recollection of having successfully double-dipped once, years ago but the details evade me. To so be sure, DO NOT register any additional FFP on rebookings on other airlines.

Yes, this was in Feb 2026, and it came as a bit of a surprise. I had successfully double-dipped with Finnair when they rebooked me onto SAS (i.e. cross-alliance) last year, due to a strike, so I lived under the illusion that double-dipping to a different alliance would be unproblematic.

Since I can't remember seeing this mentioned here at BC, I thought I should point this out. I never got around to mentioning this when it happened. Due to the T&C, and since SAS apparently can see any frequent flier card added (or at least credited) to the (re)booking they've made, I think this is a policy to be expected, rather than just me being unlucky with a specific customer service agent. AFAIK, original routing credit is not a published policy, but rather airline "goodwill", so it is difficult to argue against T&C's. But I guess some people could get lucky.

Yeah, in case this ever happens to me, if I need points to achieve/keep a status level I will not be adding my FF program then, even if from a different alliance. Thanks for your input.

And when it comes to claiming for this ORC, how does one go about doing it? I find it unusually difficult to reach out to SAS and their customer service. Whenever I call about anything they always tell me to go to the website and their website doesn't have an easy to reach form to fill or anything like that.

I searched for my old case, I used the regular retroregistration form and just described the situation.
I was told NOT to call.
