For the fourth consecutive year, Changi Airport in Singapore has been ranked as the world's best airport in the Skytrax World Airport Awards 2016. Placing first out of 550 airports, Changi is one of Southeast Asia's largest airports and the base of the world's most awarded airline, Singapore Airlines. Changi also collected an award for best Leisure Amenities at an airport.
"It is the extraordinary effort and commitment of the entire airport community that drives Changi's success. We thank our passengers and partners alike for their continued support and confidence in us,” said Lee Seow Hiang, Chief Executive Officer of Changi Airport Group. Changi Airport has now topped the list a total of 7 times, so here we will take a look at what keeps the airport head and shoulders above the rest.
World's best airport - Changi Singapore With amenities such as a free cinema, the world's first airport butterfly garden (with waterfall), and a rooftop swimming pool, Singapore’s Changi Airport is an attraction in its own right. And it's only getting better. A fourth terminal is planned to open next year, which will increase annual passenger capacity from 66 million to 82 million, followed by the opening of the much anticipated ‘Jewel’ - a brand new complex, complete with entertainment facilities, shops and hotels, as well as a much-needed expansion of the existing terminal - in 2018.
The 'Jewel' - expected to open in 2018 Construction on the ambitious ‘Jewel’ project got underway at the end of 2014 in front of Terminal 1, in place of what was previously a car park. The complex will feature a five-storey indoor forest with thousands of plants and tress, as well as four smaller gardens - known as ‘Gateway Gardens’ - with one in each quadrant of the complex, each with a different theme. The centrepiece of the ‘Jewel’ will be a 40-metre high ‘Rain Vortex’, expected to be the world’s highest indoor waterfall.
Indoor forest at the 'Jewel' Plants are a prominent feature at Changi - there is also a captivating Orchid Garden at Terminal 2 that features Singapore's national flower, the Vanda Miss Joaquim. It also has a number of rare tropical and temperate orchids. If you would rather get some fresh air and sun on your skin, then head up to the rooftop pool at Terminal 1, where you can enjoy a cocktail poolside or in the jacuzzi while watching the planes whizz above your head - who said airport stays have to be a bore?
Terminal 1's Rooftop Pool There are plenty of other options for travellers looking to unwind before or after a long flight, including the luxurious massage chairs found throughout the airport, a stroll though the stunning butterfly garden, watching a film at the 24-hour cinema, or sipping champagne at the
Concorde Bar in British Airways’ Terminal 1 lounge, which opened last year.
World's first airport Butterfly Garden Feeling a bit more active (and have about 5 hours to spare)? Then why not take a free guided tour of the city. With regular tours throughout the day, travellers with enough time can experience a boat trip up and down the Singapore River and an informational tour along the riverbanks and through parts of the city. If retail therapy is more your thing, then the 350-plus shops at Changi will no doubt keep you happy. What’s more, for every $S10 you spend, you earn a free ride on the world’s tallest airport slide – a 12m, four-storey attraction found in Terminal 3.
Over 350 shops On top of all this, there is also the mouth-watering Singaporean cuisine to try, a playground and various activities for the kids, plenty of places to relax, numerous entertainment options and, what every airport needs, a Koi Pond. We at BusinessClass know Changi Airport very well and always look forward to discovering the airport’s latest innovations. With all the attractions at the airport, it is often a place we wish we had more time to explore (which is not often said about an airport). What do you like most about Changi? And are there any features you could recommend for us to try next time?
