Yesterday was the inauguration of Singapore Airlines' new cabin class, Premium Economy, which will be put into service after the summer. Previously, the airline has released pictures of the new seat, but now they have also released details about what the product will offer, for example, in ways of food and drink
The seat
The new seat is grey with details in black and red. Legroom is 38 inches and the seat width is 18.5 inches or 19.5 inches depending on aircraft model. In Premium Economy, there will be eight seats across in a 2-4-2 configuration. The seat also has electrical sockets, two USB sockets, a reading lamp, cocktail table, footrest and storage, for example, for a laptop or a tablet, water bottle and headphones. On board the Airbus A380 and Boeing 777-300ER, ZIM Flugsitz GmbH will be responsible for manufacturing the seat, and Zodiac Seats US will provide the seat for the upcoming Airbus A350.
In-flight Entertainment System
Each Premium Economy passenger will have a private screen of 13.3 inches with HD resolution, along with noise-cancelling headphones. The in-flight entertainment system will be Singapore Airlines' usual system, KrisWorld, which offers a very large selection of movies, music and games. Panasonic have povided the hardware.
Food and drink
After take-off, a welcome cocktail will be served, including the option of champagne. There will be three choices of main course and a wide range of drinks to choose from, including champagne and wines. The champagne in Premium Economy will be Ernest Rapeneau Brut Prestige. A big positive is the new initiative that means passengers in Premium Economy will be able to pre-order food through Singapore Airlines’ 'Book The Cook’, previously only available to business class and first class passengers. ‘Book The Cook’ will be offered from the same airports as it is currently available, which, among others, includes flights from Singapore, London and Sydney. ‘Book The Cook’ will be available on all of Singapore Airlines’ routes from those airports with the exception of the route Singapore-Kuala Lumpur as it is too short. Among the dishes on the menu, you find; Rosemary Beef Brisket, Seafood Pasta in Creamed Tomato Basil Sauce, Spiced Chicken Nasi Biryani, and Assorted Dim Sum. There are also some alternative breakfast options.
Amenities
Passengers in Premium Economy will be given a toothbrush, toothpaste and socks.
Check-in, baggage and bonus points
Those travelling in Premium Economy will be able to check-in at a separate counter at the airport and their bags will then receive a priority tag, this means Premium Economy bags will be delivered before economy class bags after landing. Passengers in Premium Economy will also be granted a generous baggage limit - 35kg. If you are a member of Singapore Airlines’ KrisFlyer frequent flyer program, you will earn 110% points flying in Premium Economy. How points will be awarded in other frequent flyer programs in the Star Alliance are not yet clear.
Launch Date
The first flight of Premium Economy will depart on August 9, 2015, and will initially be offered on the more important routes of Singapore to London, Paris, Hong Kong and Sydney.
