Review: Air New Zealand Business Class across the Pacific

Background

Air New Zealand has earned a reputation for its innovative spirit and distinctive onboard experience. From globally recognized safety videos featuring New Zealand icons to pioneering the revolutionary SkyCouch in Economy, this carrier consistently sets the bar for creativity and passenger engagement. The airline’s unmistakable Kiwi hospitality is woven into every aspect of the journey, distinguishing it from other global competitors.

Travelers can choose from a classic Economy product, a Premium Economy seat with a generous recline housed in a protective shell, and the airline’s signature fully flat Business Premier suite, designed for privacy and comfort.

On my recent Los Angeles to Auckland flight, I enjoyed the Business Premier suite on board Air New Zealand’s flagship Boeing 777-300ER, which remains a cornerstone of the long-haul fleet. The airline has further modernized its service with the introduction of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, following the retirement of the last 747-400s, ensuring a modern and efficient journey across the Pacific.

Premium Ground Experience at LAX

My trip commenced with a seamless transfer from United Airlines, a fellow Star Alliance partner. Because the two airlines operate from separate LAX terminals, a short walk and another security check at Terminal 2 were required. Fortunately, Air New Zealand provides dedicated premium check-in counters for Business Class and Elite travelers, staffed by welcoming and efficient personnel. Within ten minutes, I was relaxing in the refreshed Air New Zealand lounge.

The lounge, which welcomes Star Alliance Gold members as well as Business Class guests, was lively due to multiple daily departures—including two flights to Auckland and one to London Heathrow. Despite the crowd, I easily found a quiet workspace, and staff offered access to the nearby Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge should additional seating be needed.

With Air New Zealand now operating from the state-of-the-art Tom Bradley International Terminal, guests enjoy the acclaimed Star Alliance lounge facilities. Highlights include a diverse selection of buffet stations, a made-to-order pho bar, and a curated array of New Zealand wines and classic cocktails. The outdoor terrace, complete with a fireplace and tranquil water features, offers panoramic views of the apron and a peaceful retreat before departure.

Announcements for boarding are made within the lounge, with staggered calls for convenience. I opted to remain until the final call, maximizing productivity in the lounge before joining the expedited Business Class boarding lane downstairs—an appreciated touch for premium travelers.

Boarding & Cabin Ambience: First Impressions

Stepping aboard, I was delighted to secure a coveted window seat within the 1-2-1 reverse herringbone configuration. While this design optimizes privacy for solo travelers, couples may find themselves separated by the aisle or in tandem rows, requiring a bit of effort to converse comfortably.

My suite-like seat was prepared with a plush amenity kit, two sizes of pillows, a thick duvet, and a comprehensive menu accompanied by an extensive wine list—showcasing Air New Zealand’s pride in its award-winning vineyards.

The attentive cabin crew greeted me by name, offering a choice of champagne or still water. I savored a glass of bubbles while exploring the thoughtfully curated dining and beverage selections.

The flight was at full capacity, including the popular Premium Economy cabin located just behind Business. Air New Zealand’s innovative SkyCouch—transforming a row of three economy seats into a comfortable bed—remains a standout feature and is now available through select partner airlines under license.

Due to the busy cabin, I was unable to photograph the other classes, but the pre-departure safety video, starring renowned Kiwi adventurer Bear Grylls, delivered safety instructions with signature New Zealand wit and flair.

Seat Comfort & Sleeping Arrangement

Each Business Premier seat angles slightly toward the aisle, employing Air New Zealand’s proprietary design that seamlessly transitions between a relaxed recline and a fully horizontal bed. Notably, the seat does not require returning to the upright position for takeoff or landing, a unique convenience.

For maximum comfort, the seat converts into a fully flat bed with the assistance of the crew, who add a memory foam mattress topper and plush bedding. While this setup provides a restful sleep environment, it does necessitate crew assistance to switch between seat and bed modes—most guests opt for a single conversion each way on these ultra-long-haul segments.

Window seats offer excellent seclusion, though direct views can require some maneuvering. While the open design means some exposure to the aisle, the thick pillows, cozy duvets, and padded mattress more than compensate, ensuring a restful transpacific slumber.

In-Flight Entertainment: Variety & Technology

The generously sized entertainment screen swings out conveniently, allowing comfortable viewing while dining or lounging. The system offers an impressive library: complete television series, a vast array of films—including recent releases and classics—plus a robust selection of documentaries and music. Even frequent flyers would find it challenging to exhaust the content on offer.

While I intended to catch up on work, the immersive entertainment quickly won me over. The user-friendly interface even displays a timeline for onboard services, including when snacks are available and when entertainment will pause for landing, which is especially helpful for planning rest and viewing time.

Air New Zealand’s entertainment system is clearly tailored for ultra-long-haul journeys, providing enough variety to keep even the most discerning traveler engaged for hours on end.

Gourmet Dining & Service Experience

In Business Premier, Air New Zealand serves meals using a streamlined trolley service reminiscent of economy, but elevated by attentive, personable crew. While the carts are functional rather than decorative, the staff’s enthusiasm and warmth more than make up for it, often sharing travel tips and local insights with guests—adding a bespoke, destination-focused touch.

The meal began with a thoughtfully presented appetizer, paired with a signature cocktail and a selection of artisan breads, including a crusty sourdough roll. The famed New Zealand butter and a taste of Marmite were memorable highlights.

The comprehensive wine list focuses on New Zealand’s best vineyards, and the crew are eager to arrange informal tastings for those interested. My main course—pan-seared cod with fragrant basmati rice—was flavorful and perfectly cooked, and my glass was never empty for long.

Meal service is intentionally efficient, allowing passengers ample rest time. After a satisfying cheese course and dessert, my seat was swiftly transformed into a comfortable bed.

Air New Zealand’s lavatories feature premium amenities, including hydrating lotions and playful decor. Uniquely, contemporary Kiwi music plays in the restroom, adding a whimsical and memorable touch to the inflight experience.

The crew’s flexibility with meal timing stands out. Breakfast service begins about two hours prior to landing, but guests can request it later, ensuring that sleep is prioritized—a thoughtful feature for business travelers with demanding schedules.

Rest & Wellness Onboard

Business Premier includes universal power outlets at every seat, making it easy to recharge devices during the journey. I managed to work briefly before succumbing to the comfort of the fully flat bed, enjoying nearly seven hours of uninterrupted sleep despite the tempting entertainment options.

Departing late from Los Angeles, the cabin’s tranquil atmosphere and premium bedding helped me adjust quickly to the new time zone. I recommend using an eye mask for deeper rest, as the seat’s sidewalls provide a degree of privacy and reduce disturbances from the aisle.

Final Thoughts: Air New Zealand Business Premier

Air New Zealand’s Business Premier delivers an expertly curated long-haul experience, tailored to the needs of discerning business and leisure travelers alike. Unlike some competitors that interrupt sleep with early meal services, Air New Zealand’s flexible approach allows guests to maximize rest—an essential feature for transpacific journeys.

With polished service, innovative amenities, and a uniquely Kiwi sense of hospitality, Air New Zealand continues to set the standard for luxury travel between North America and New Zealand.
