Reopening Of Iconic Malaga Hotel Signifies Cultural Renaissance Of Andalucian City
The iconic five-star Gran Hotel Miramar in
reopened this year to underscore the Spanish city’s current cultural renaissance.
The city has spent over €100 million over the last ten years on the development of the arts, as well as improvements to the city’s tourism infrastructure.
This has seen the historic Andalucían city, the birthplace of Pablo Picasso, transform into a cosmopolitan and cultured destination. No longer merely the gateway to the Costa del Sol, the cultural investment in Malaga has allowed a fantastic fine food scene to emerge, a local art scene to flourish, and over thirty hotels to operate.
The ongoing investment has coincided with an increased number of visitors over the years, who now have a new luxurious base to explore the city from. The recent reopening of the Gran Hotel Miramar follows a €65 million renovation and is the latest chapter in the city’s evolution into a hotspot of cultural excellence.
Once a favourite of Spanish royalty, foreign aristocrats and Hollywood stars alike, the beachfront Gran Hotel Miramar had been sitting empty for years before a painstaking two-year overhaul returned this majestic edifice to its former glory, preserving or revitalising many of its original features, including intricate Moorish carved wood arches, a beautiful first floor gallery, Andalusian tiling, hand-painted frescoes and ornate stucco ceilings.
The decor is at heart grand but a modern luxe finish is the result. A brilliant white dominates most the hotel, inside and out (shades may be necessary indoors).
200 spacious rooms, including 10 suites, will charm you with their attention to detail, stunning views and Mediterranean essence. Some have balconies, while bathrooms come with rain showers and separate baths. Products are from Hermès.
Dining options include the Principe de Asturias restaurant, with sea views and terrace tables and a locally-inspired menu full of the finest seafood.
There’s also a large indoor/outdoor buffet restaurant by the pool for lighter bites and a wide number of healthy options.
The rooftop bar has a party vibe in the evening, as well as spectacular views and great cocktails.
Spend lazy days lounging by the outdoor pool or unwinding in the comprehensive spa complete with
an indoor relaxation pool, thermal circuit, sauna and steam room.
Drag yourself away from the hotel and explore some of Malaga’s great museums such as the famous Picasso Museum, the Carmen Thyssen Museum and the Centre for Contemporary Art.
