Luxury Thai hotel brand Anantara has opened its first hotel in Europe. And it’s a beauty.

Set along southern Portugal’s picturesque Algarve coast, a very convenient 15-minute drive from Faro International Airport, the Anantara Vilamoura Algarve Resort welcomed its first guests at the beginning of April.

The five-star resort, which was previously operating as the Tivoli Victoria, overlooks the Arnold Palmer-designed Oceânico golf course. Whilst close enough to the ocean, marinas and stunning beaches of the Algarve, Anantara Vilamoura maintains tranquillity amongst orange grove trees and wetland. The resort showcases Anantara’s signature Thai hospitality, paired with laid back style and flavour of southern Portugal.

Spectacular welcome to the Anantara Vilamoura Algarve Resort Some 280 comfortable rooms and suites boast shady verandas facing the curated gardens, swimming pools, and prestigious fairways of the golf course. Interiors are relaxed and chic, with local natural woods and fibres incorporated.

Unique additions from local artisans can also be found in the 17 Anantara Suites, hand-woven pool bags, locally sourced cork coasters and signature Algarvian ceramic fruit bowls. Further comforts include an in-room wine humidor, pillow menu and on-call butler service to attend to guests’ every need.

Those travelling with friends or family can make use of interconnecting guest rooms and the posh Family Suite category, which accommodates up to four guests. Suite guests also have exclusive access to the indoor pool and sauna at the Anantara Spa, which looks out onto the rolling greens.

The prestigious Presidential Suite offers a huge terrace with a private dining area, a new Jacuzzi and a sun deck for enjoying balmy evenings with friends.

The luxury resort has made a big push to cater for children, due to the Algarve’s popularity with families. The new Adventurers Crèche and the Adventurers Kids Club, which will open mid-May, will offer activities such as art classes, cooking classes, open air cinema, adventure safaris and more.

Guests can get pampered at the newly renovated Anantara Spa, where a wide selection of therapies includes the brand’s signature Traditional Thai Massage, centuries-old Ayurveda rituals, and treatments using locally-sourced ingredients such as Algarvian citrus fruits, figs and almond powder. Yoga and tai chi sessions are also on offer, whilst a well-equipped gym is open 24 hours a day.

Four swimming pools include Cascades, an adults-only pool with golf fairway views, and a children’s pool for families, with deckchairs by the kids’ club.

Six restaurants and bars will exemplify Anantara’s passion for indigenous flair, taking advantage of Executive Chef Bruno Viegas Portuguese culinary excellence.

Most notable is the new wine-oriented restaurant, EMO, where Bruno and the resort’s Wine Guru António Lopes have created a menu that reflects the terroir heritage of the region. Elegant dishes, such as Braised Turbot, Salt Cod Loins and Pata Negra Ham, come with a choice of over 300 accompanying wines from the region, allowing diners to truly savour the tastes of the country.

Additionally, the resort offers spectacular settings and venues for all types of events, and there’s a stand-alone Conference Centre that has a capacity of up to 800 people in its eight versatile rooms.

The hotel and golf course

Portugal - and especially its family-friendly Algarve region - has seen a sharp growth in visitors over the last two years. Many safety-conscious travellers are being put off previously popular Mediterranean destinations, such as

Tunisia

, due to fears of terrorism and unrest.

This has seen the Algarve - with its balmy weather, glorious coastline, and sensational seafood - enthusiastically welcome more tourists than ever before, even setting a new annual tourism record two months before the end of 2016.
