Old Shoreditch courthouse to open as luxury boutique hotel
Spending a night in the ‘slammer’ has never been so appealing now that a luxury boutique hotel is set to open within the former Old Street Magistrates’ Court and Police Station in Shoreditch.
The Grade-II listed building, which houses the very cells where notorious London gangsters Ronnie and Reggie Kray were once detained at Her Majesty’s Pleasure, has undergone a £40million renovation to open as the Courthouse Hotel Shoreditch on June 1st.
Complete with gym, heated indoor swimming pool, luxury spa, two-lane bowling alley, 200-seat cinema, and rooftop bar, the 128-room hotel is one of London’s most hotly anticipated hotel openings.
Once temporary home to the East End’s most notorious felons, the hotel houses 86 guest rooms and 42 suites, spearheaded by the Shoreditch Sky Terrace Suites - two “jaw-dropping” one-bedroom residences spread out across 60 square metres, each with panoramic London skyline views, a private bar and mini cinema lounge. The former Courtroom Number 1 is now the main fine dining restaurant, whilst Courtroom Number 2 has been transformed into an “ultra-exclusive” members’ bar.
The main bar features five former jail cells, reimagined as private booths where one can sip justice-themed cocktails such as “slammer”, “clink” and “nick”. Other facilities include events space for 450 people, fitness centre, treatment rooms, steam room and sauna.
Steeped in history, the Courthouse Hotel Shoreditch - which will complement the original Courthouse Hotel in Soho’s former Marlborough Street magistrates’ court - is set to be quite the destination in itself. We at BusinessClass always like to experience the extraordinary, and a night in the cells at this luxury boutique hotel certainly fits the bill.
