Oktoberfest on board Lufthansa this year - with 1950’s uniforms

This year marks the 60th anniversary of Oktoberfest on board Lufthansa. The German airline will celebrate with the cabin crew on some flights not only wearing traditional Bavarian costumes, as has been custom for several decades, but also traditional costumes from the 50s, when the tradition began.

In the 1950s you could board a Lufthansa Super Constellation-aircraft between Hamburg and New York or a Lufthansa Convair-aircraft between Munich and London and be served by flight attendants in Dirndls, if you were lucky. This was much appreciated among the passengers. September 16, 2015, 60 years later, it is again time for celebrations, which this year are heading to Charlotte, Vancouver and Dubai. On September 16, a total of fourteen flight attendants in traditional costumes will be taking off to Charlotte, on September 21 to Vancouver, and on September 29 to Dubai. The celebration will also be observed in Europe where three flight attendants at Lufthansa CityLine will serve in Bavarian costumes on different flights. At Munich Airport, part of the service staff will wear traditional costumes, while lounges in Munich will serve local Bavarian specialties. Lufthansa First Class will also honour Oktoberfest with “culinary highlights” available from its menu and drink list. The 1950’s costumes have been designed by Munich-based fashion house Angermaier Trachten. The flight attendants’ Wiesn-Dirndl has been recreated in the style of the times, light blue with woven patterns in beige. The apron is beige with discreet light-blue dots. A newspaper report at the time wrote: “Lufthansa stewardesses in real Dirndls will look after passengers on board the Super Constellation from New York to Hamburg, as well as on Lufthansa- Convair planes from London to Munich during the Munich Oktoberfest.”
