One of

2017’s most eagerly-anticipated

and eco-friendly luxury hotels has opened its doors in New York.

Uber-modern

1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge

, situated just south of the iconic Brooklyn Bridge, is progressing the movement known as “ecoluxury” through a range of eco-friendly initiatives. With its sustainable outlook, the hotel offers all the bells and whistles of luxury accommodation without the environmental hangover.

The hotel, which uses 100 percent wind power energy, makes good on 1 Hotels’ founder Barry Sternlicht’s philosophy: “The world around us is beautiful, and we want to keep it that way,” by boasting a number of green drives, such as the dramatic 25-foot green wall in the lobby, which features steel grating covered in hand-placed plants and creeping vines that will evolve over time. There’s also fleet of free electric Tesla cars for guests to zip around the city in.

The 194 guestrooms, including 29 two-to-six-bedroom suites and The Riverhouse presidential suite continue the green theme and are decked out with reclaimed woods, industrial steel, custom hemp-blend mattress by Keetsa, and 100% organic cotton sheets. Most also boast panoramic views of the East River, the Brooklyn Bridge and the New York City skyline through floor-to-ceiling windows.

Furnishings include a porous stone-looking table of composite wood, leather chairs and pendant leather lampshades. Many of the design details in the rooms are by local artisans, from the “crane-inspired,” open-slatted wood closets, corrugated leather headboards, to the Fresnel glass light fixtures.

The next-generation hotel caters to today’s modern traveller with a state-of-the-art fitness centre; a yoga and barre studio operated by POE Yoga; two restaurants; a farm stand in the lobby selling fruits, nuts and granola; an intimate 10th floor lounge, a 50-seat screening room, and lobby cocktail service.

Guests will also be able to indulge at the 4,000 square-foot rooftop Bamford Haybarn Spa when it opens in June, or sip cocktails at the rooftop pool and bar, complete with fire pits and a 3-foot lounge pool, when it opens in May. A soon-to-be-announced restaurant, led by a well known chef whose name is being kept under wraps, is also planned for the summer.

The hotel utilises some more impressive sustainability initiatives, including a rainwater reclamation system, low-energy light bulbs, a Triple Clear water purification system, in-room recycling bins, and fresh dining offerings.

So, the next time you’re in New York, make your way over to Brooklyn to check out what very well may be the pioneer of the next big trend in the luxury hotel industry, or, at the very least, a vibrant cultural hub with funky art, unique events, and an eclectic crowd.
