Macedonia has plenty to offer visitors, whether its the local cuisine - Macedonia is home to the famous moussaka - the natural beauty or the favourable prices compared to Western Europe, the landlocked Balkan country is somewhat of an understated paradise.
Located on the river Vardar, Skopje, the capital city, has undergone a drastic transformation over the last few years which has bridged the gap between the city’s immense history and modern city life - it has even been labelled a mini-Las vegas by some due to its curious statues and abundance of bright lights. Now, for the first time, Marriott has opened a luxury hotel in the country, the Skopje Marriott Hotel. Situated on Macedonia Square, overlooking the river, the 164-room hotel offers “the very best in comfort and style.”
All rooms, including the luxurious Presidential Suite, offer a combination of traditional architecture and modern interior design, whilst the hotel boasts an array of innovative facilities and design features, including Marriott’s signature Greatroom lobby, as well as a restaurant and two bars. The hotel caters to business travellers with seven separate event spaces, the largest accommodating up to 400 people, along with a multifunctional space for open discussions, workshops and private meetings.
The hotel’s restaurant, Distrikt Bar + Kitchen, combines the best local produce with Eastern European and Mediterranean influences. Culinary highlights include market-fresh fish and a Josper charcoal grill, which gives a unique and delicious flavour to the aged-steak selection on offer, according to Marriott.
The hotel also houses a spa and is in close proximity to the city’s most famous attractions, including the Stone Bridge, the ‘Warrior on a Horse’ statue, as well as theatres, museums, bars and restaurants.
With Macedonia working hard to enhance its image and global appeal, the Skopje Marriott Hotel looks like an attractive offering in the eccentric capital. Some say you either love or hate Skopje. Have you been recently? What is your opinion? Let us know in the comments…
