Thanks to its football team’s remarkable title-winning season - which has captured the hearts and attention of the world - Leicester is set to become a new hotspot for tourists visiting the UK.
Hotel searches to Leicester on trivago.co.uk jumped by an incredible 277 per cent following Tottenham’s draw against Chelsea on Monday 2nd May, which saw Leicester clinch the 2015-16 Premier League as 5000-1 outsiders. The newfound interest in the East Midlands city is also allowing hotels to charge a higher fee than usual - the current average price of a hotel room in Leicester on Saturday is £128, up 49 per cent from the May monthly average of £86. The startling win is also expected to result in an increase in the value of ‘football tourism’ in the UK, in particular from the home countries of some of Leicester City’s stars, including Germany, France, Italy and Japan. VisitBritain director Patricia Yates, commented, "Leicester City's fantastic win is truly the stuff of legends and has thrust the players, the fans, the city and Britain as the 'home of football' into the global spotlight. "Football has mass international appeal and a global fan base of billions and we know that people like to visit the home of their sporting heroes.” Football is big business and a fairytale story like Leicester’s looks likely to transform the city into a football hotspot in a very short space of time. Do you live in Leicester or have you got plans to visit the now-famous city? Let us know if you think the win will be good or bad for the city. And, lastly, congratulations to Leicester City Football Club!
