KLM Business Class, Amsterdam-London Heathrow

At the airport

During my recent connection at Amsterdam Schiphol, all that remained before my onward flight was a security screening—a standard procedure when transiting from the Netherlands to the UK, which remains outside the Schengen zone.

With a generous 90-minute layover, I took the opportunity to unwind at the KLM Crown Lounge in the non-Schengen area, conveniently located above the bustling shopping concourse near the F-pier. The lounge boasts expansive space, yet it can feel lively during peak intercontinental departures. On this quiet morning, however, the ambiance was serene, offering a peaceful retreat from the terminal's energy.

The lounge’s contemporary décor and plush seating—each equipped with personal power outlets—provide comfort and utility for business travelers. Floor-to-ceiling windows deliver panoramic views of the airfield and runways. While the lounge atmosphere remains inviting, the food selection has shifted in recent years, with fewer options and a focus on lighter fare compared to past visits.

Boarding and first impression

Departure to London was from gate D6, which is a ground-level bus gate at Schiphol’s D-pier. Before accessing the gate, boarding passes were verified and security screening completed, a step required for travelers heading to non-Schengen destinations.

Sky Priority lanes at both security and boarding made the process seamless for business class guests. As a result, I was among the first to board the shuttle bus, though all passengers ultimately traveled together to the aircraft.

KLM operates a diverse fleet on this route, adjusting aircraft type based on demand. On this occasion, the Embraer 190—a regional jet known for its efficiency and comfort—was in service.

Pre-departure, the crew offered a selection of Dutch, British, and international newspapers, as well as a refreshing hot towel. We departed promptly at 11:40am, with a scheduled flight time of just over 50 minutes to London.

The seat

The Embraer 190 features 104 seats arranged in a 2-2 configuration across 26 rows. Business class occupies the first two rows, and unlike KLM’s intra-European service on larger aircraft—where the adjacent seat is blocked for added privacy—the Embraer’s layout does not provide a guaranteed empty seat. That said, on this flight, only five out of the eight business seats were occupied, affording me the luxury of extra space beside me.

Seats are upholstered in sleek black leather and deliver a high level of comfort for a short-haul journey. Legroom in row two was ample, although it appears more limited further back in the cabin.

The meal

Once airborne and the seatbelt sign was off, the attentive cabin crew swiftly began meal service—an impressive feat given the brief duration and full passenger load.

Business class guests were presented with a cold meal, highlighted by a fresh salad featuring olives and feta. The main offering included a choice of sandwiches: one with beef pastrami and sun-dried tomato, and a vegetarian option with creamy brie and crisp cucumber. Dessert was a coconut mousse with fruit purée—a staple of KLM’s short-haul catering.

The meal arrived in a paper box with a detachable lid, a pragmatic approach for efficiency, though a traditional tray would have elevated the premium feel. Inside, a printed card detailed the meal and beverage selections tailored to the time of day: breakfast (05:00-10:00), lunch (10:00-15:00), and dinner (15:00-00:00). The wine list offered a sparkling Spanish cava (Codorníu Clásico), a French Chardonnay (Corette, Pays d'Oc), and an Australian Shiraz (Paddock, Hunter Valley).

I opted for the white wine, followed by freshly brewed coffee to round off the meal.

Service

The two flight attendants on board conducted the service with professionalism and warmth, though the interaction was succinct due to time constraints. The purser focused on business class passengers before assisting colleagues in economy, where snacks and beverages were distributed. Additional drink requests were accommodated during service rounds.

Given the short sector, the crew managed to deliver a polished and timely experience for all guests.

Arrival

Our early arrival at Heathrow—15 minutes ahead of schedule—was a welcome surprise. As a member of SkyTeam, KLM operates out of Terminal 4, which is well-equipped for swift connections.

Immigration was expedited thanks to the efficient e-gates, allowing for a seamless entry experience. However, despite the priority tag, my checked luggage was among the last to appear on the carousel, arriving in 30th position even with several premium passengers on board.

Conclusion

This short-haul journey with KLM showcased reliable service and comfortable seating. While the meal presentation could benefit from a more refined approach, the attentive staff and efficient ground experience made for a smooth and enjoyable flight.
