The most expensive airport trains in Europe are found in London and Stockholm

According to the latest research, London remains home to four of the five most expensive airport train connections in Europe, reinforcing its reputation for premium-priced travel infrastructure. The Heathrow Express tops the chart, with Stansted Express and Stockholm Arlanda Express close behind, ranking among the continent’s highest fares for airport rail transfers.

An in-depth analysis by Flightright.co.uk evaluated ticket prices from the official sources of 47 major European airports, focusing on the highest-priced single fares for each route.

As of 2025, a standard adult ticket on the Heathrow Express costs £26, maintaining its status as Europe’s most expensive airport rail journey. The Stansted Express follows at £23.40, while Sweden’s Arlanda Express between Stockholm city center and Arlanda Airport is priced at £22.07. Rounding out the top five are London’s Gatwick Express and Luton Airport Express. Notably, outside London’s metropolitan area, ticket prices for airport transfers decrease sharply. For example, Bristol Airport’s train service is less than half the cost of Luton’s, and only a fraction of the Heathrow Express fare.

This pricing disparity has sparked widespread conversation in the UK, with major outlets like The Telegraph highlighting that, for some, flying to destinations such as Spain may be less expensive than a rail journey to Heathrow Airport.

By contrast, Europe’s most affordable airport rail transfers are found in cities like Pisa, Catania, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, and Milan Linate, where passengers pay a fraction of the fares seen in London and Stockholm.
