Emirates introduces blankets made from plastic bottles
Following the recent introduction of
specially-designed moisturising pyjamas
for its premium customers, Emirates is now launching sustainable blankets made from recycled plastic bottles.
Available in Economy Class on all long-haul Emirates flights, the environmentally-friendly blankets are made using ecoTHREAD™ patented technology.
Each one is made from 28 recycled plastic bottles, which are recycled into plastic chips before being turned into yarn, creating a polar fleece material. The fine thread is then woven into soft blankets. By the end of 2019, Emirates expects the blankets to have used 88 million plastic bottles, saving them from being dumped at landfills where it may take up to 1,000 years to decompose, and potentially leak pollutants into the soil and water.
Emirates' new eco-friendly blankets for its Economy passengers The blankets, designed in partnership with in-flight product specialists Buzz, are the latest innovation in Emirates’ commitment to developing sustainable products and practices. The Dubai-based airlines already runs a green initiative on board recycling aluminium cans, plastic and glass bottles, and clean paper products such as newspapers, magazines and cardboard cartons where possible.
