Domestic and international merge at Copenhagen Kastrup Airport from March 29th

Copenhagen Kastrup Airport has redefined the passenger journey by consolidating domestic and international flight operations. This strategic integration, which took effect on March 29th, has eliminated the previously lengthy transfers for travelers connecting between Danish cities and international destinations. Here’s an expert breakdown of what this means for travelers in 2025.

Previously, all domestic routes were handled in Terminal 1, located at the far end of the airport complex, while international departures—especially those operated by SAS—were based in Terminal 3. This physical separation often resulted in extended walking distances and less convenient transfers. With the merger, all flights now utilize the superior amenities and centralized layout of Terminals 2 and 3, streamlining connections and elevating the overall travel experience.

This transformation was made possible through a comprehensive, multi-year agreement between Copenhagen Airport and its airline partners, reflecting a shared commitment to passenger-centric innovation.

Here’s what travelers can expect with the new layout:

  • SAS services to Aalborg and Aarhus during peak hours now utilize the D pier, providing swift access to the SAS Lounge, fast track security, and convenient baggage claim, as well as seamless connections to other SAS-operated flights.
  • SAS flights to and from Billund are assigned to the B pier for optimal transit efficiency.
  • During quieter periods, SAS domestic flights primarily depart from gates C2–C8, with passengers transported to aircraft via dedicated buses, ensuring operational flexibility.
  • Norwegian’s Aalborg flights depart from the A pier, alongside the rest of Norwegian’s European network.
  • Flights to Ronne, Karup (DAT), and Sønderborg (ALSIE Express) are typically assigned to gates A7, A9, and A11, while ES-Air’s Esbjerg route also operates from the A pier, offering consistency for regional travelers.

Exclusive Fast Track and Lounge Access for SAS Elite Passengers

Frequent SAS guests now benefit from an upgraded check-in process in Terminal 3, immediately accessible via train or metro arrivals. Modern self-service bag drop kiosks expedite the process for those with checked luggage. SAS Plus, EuroBonus Gold, and Diamond members can take advantage of priority security via fast track and unwind in the award-winning SAS Lounge, recognized among Europe’s best for comfort and amenities.

Upon arrival from domestic flights, all checked baggage is delivered to carousel 5 in the arrivals hall, ensuring predictability and speed.

For connecting passengers, SAS flights within Europe and Scandinavia are concentrated at piers B and D, while long-haul and non-Schengen destinations primarily use the C pier. This thoughtful arrangement significantly shortens transfer distances and optimizes the airport experience for all SAS travelers.

SAS leadership has publicly endorsed the new operational model. As Lars W. Andersen, Director of Public Affairs and Infrastructure at SAS, shared: “Our close collaboration with Copenhagen Airport has allowed us to prioritize our customers’ needs. The airport has shown tremendous flexibility in supporting our vision for a seamless travel experience.”

It’s important to note that gate assignments may be adjusted at short notice due to operational reasons such as adverse weather or labor disruptions, in line with industry best practices.
