It is estimated that over 100,000 items of luggage are lost every DAY around the world.
Apple is introducing a new feature aimed at simplifying the process for passengers and airlines to locate misplaced luggage.
Called Share Item Location, this feature will be included in the public beta of iOS 18.2 and will be available from December 8th as a free software update for iPhone X and newer models.
This function allows passengers to share the location of their AirTags with over 15 airlines, including British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Delta and United, enabling both parties to track delayed or mishandled luggage more effectively. Apple hopes that additional airlines will join the programme over time. Partner airlines will securely accept AirTag owners' Share Item Location links, according to Apple.
Lost luggage has long been a vexing issue for both passengers and airlines. Despite the significant advancements in aviation technology, the complexities of baggage handling systems continue to challenge the seamless flow of our possessions from one destination to another.
The BusinessClass.com guide to the best 9 Best Luggage Trackers available to travellers today, including reliable tag options that do not require connectivity.
Apple AirTag – Bluetooth 5.0
This small, versatile device connects to iOS devices via Bluetooth 5.0 and offers travellers real-time tracking at a range of around 240 metres (800 feet) with the benefit of a replaceable battery. The AirTags use other nearby Apple devices to ping their location when they are out of range and can also store owner contact details, should they get lost and then found. With a straightforward connection to iPhones or iPads and relatively inexpensive to purchase, these devices are among the most popular on the market. One of the few downsides is that they are only compatible with Apple. However, no subscription is needed, and they are good to go directly from activation.
Samsung Galaxy Smart Tag Plus – Bluetooth 5.0
Similar to the Apple AirTag, the Samsung Galaxy Smart Tag Plus is a small plastic fob that works off Bluetooth 5.0 to connect Samsung Galaxy phone customers with their luggage. Like Apple, the device will pick up a signal outside the stated 130-metre Bluetooth range if other users subscribe to the Galaxy Find Network. One negative of the device is that walls, drawers and vehicles could compromise the location accuracy.
Tile Pro – Bluetooth
Unlike the previous two options, the Tile Pro is compatible with both Apple and Android devices or using a simple app on a computer. The device has a range of around 120 metres (400 feet) and has a loud beep feature to locate the device. It also works in reverse – double press the Tile Pro, and the connecting phone will beep (even in silent mode). Though not specifically designed for luggage, the Tile Pro is versatile, water-resistant, and inexpensive for luggage security. A QR code stores personal details should your belongings be found, and other benefits include a replaceable battery with around a one-year lifespan and Alexa and Google connectivity. A subscription is required for out-of-distance tracking.
Tracki GPS Tracker – GPS and Wi-Fi
This powerful tracker uses real-time GPS positioning via Wi-Fi, LTE 4G, 3G and 2G network coverage using a worldwide SIM, making this an unlimited global tracker. The device is small, so it can fit anywhere, and it has a rechargeable battery, which does require charging if it is on the move and tracking consistently for up to five days at a time. The user can adjust the frequency of position alerts to extend battery life or use battery-saver mode for up to 75 days of battery life. Key features include geofencing alerts when the tracker/luggage leaves a pre-determined area set by the user (such as hotel rooms or airport lounges). Real-time location information is accurately displayed via the dedicated Tracki App, and a subscription is required along with mobile network access. That said, the device is inexpensive to purchase.
LandAirSea 54 GPS Tracker – GPS and Wi-Fi
LandAirSea 54 GPS Tracker is another powerful global GPS positioning tracker with added Wi-Fi connectivity when indoors. Real-time updates are received via LTE 4G with a worldwide SIM and geofencing for location alerts when the device moves outside a specified area. The tracker has a powerful magnet for attaching to metal objects, so this must be considered when placed near electronic items affected by batteries. The device is small and waterproof and recharges with a micro-USB cable every one to two weeks of continual use, depending on the frequency of location updates. A power-saving mode extends the battery life for up to 6 months. LandAirSea 54 requires a subscription and works with Android, iOS and PC internet browsers. One negative aspect is that this device does not turn off during flight.
PAJ GPS ALLROUND Finder – GPS
The PAJ GPS ALLROUND Finder is another tracking device containing a worldwide SIM for global tracking to the strongest mobile network in over 100 countries. The device is slightly bigger than the previous options but still small enough to slide into luggage, backpacks or handbags without taking up space. The device offers real-time tracking and geofencing with alerts when the device leaves or enters a designated area, plus 365 days of data storage with tracked routes, including time and speed. Live tracking positions update every 30 seconds, and the device is adaptable to several different alarm settings. Strong battery life provides around 20 days of tracking or up to 40 days in standby mode. Users must subscribe to receive the tracking app, which can be used on mobile phones, tablets or PCs.
Retreev Smart Luggage Tag – NFC & QR Code
The Retreev Smart Luggage Tag is a privacy-protected luggage tag that contains a unique ID that links to a secure Retreev account. When found, the finder taps or scans the tag and submits their details online. The owner is then emailed with the finder's contact details. Retreev is linked to the WorldTracer Airline Baggage Tracing system used by over 500 airlines that are members of IATA at more than 2800 airports worldwide. The tags come in a wide variety of fun and practical designs and are secured with a tough stainless-steel ring. No subscription is required.
DynoTag SuperTag ID – QR Code
The DynoTag comes in many robust forms and is a simple tag containing a QR code. Much like the Retreev system, the DynoTag user enters their contact information (as much or as little as is practicable) and, when lost, requires a finder to scan the code. The user is then auto-notified via email when the tag is viewed, and no app is needed. A lifetime warranty service comes with every tag, meaning unlimited replacements at any time, and a "Good Samaritan" program provides incentive rewards for finders to expedite luggage recovery. The tag is non-discreet and will fix to all types of bags for easy identification. No subscription is required.
Groov-e My Tag - Bluetooth
Groov-e My Tag, a Bluetooth tracker, enables users to keep track of the items that matter most to them such as keys, bags, wallets and luggage. My Tag only works with Apple devices.
Certified “Apple Find My” My Tag uses Apple’s powerful Find My network of millions of Apple devices around the world to help users easily find their valuables. My Tag also features Precision Finding which means users can pinpoint the exact location of the item with their iPhone guiding them directly to it via visual, audible and haptic feedback.
For those times when items can’t be found but aren’t too far away, maybe a wallet has fallen down the back of the sofa or keys have been left in a pocket or bag, My Tag has a loud built-in 60 dB buzzer so users can easily find the item by following the sound.
Set-up is easy, users simply connect My Tag to an iPhone or iPad and attach it to, or place it in the item they want to track. Small, yet robust and with an IP67 waterproof rating, My Tag could also be used to keep track of bikes and scooters which are often outside in the elements. A CR2032 battery that will last for up-to one year is included and is easily replaceable thereafter.
At just over half the price of an Apple AirTag, the more affordable Groov-e My Tag provides added protection for valuables against theft or loss and gives users peace of mind knowing they can track their belongings at all times.
Final Thoughts
With airport technologies constantly developing, the need to protect our luggage from loss should become less of an issue. That said, thousands of people are still left standing at the carousel each year, scratching their heads when their luggage fails to appear. These simple and inexpensive tracking solutions offer travellers peace of mind and versatility beyond airport travel.
FAQs
Are trackers free to use?
This depends on the type of tracker. Most QR code tags and Bluetooth tracker devices do not require a paid subscription. Most GPS and Mobile network systems require a monthly or annual subscription payment.
What are the limitations of each type of tracker?
QR or NFC tags do not offer real-time tracking and rely upon a finder to contact the owner or a helpline.
Bluetooth trackers have a limited range. Out-of-area coverage often requires an enhanced paid subscription.
GPS satellite signal strength can be compromised by the environment, such as mountains, buildings, and trees, but when properly connected, the location details can be very accurate. When compromised, this issue is resolved by mobile network triangulation, which is less accurate. These inevitably come with monthly or annual subscription charges.
Should I buy a tracker?
If you are a frequent flyer or have been one of the many unfortunate travellers separated from your luggage, the answer is yes. Even if you are an infrequent traveller, many trackers featured are inexpensive and provide added peace of mind. They can also be used for multiple uses outside of travelling.
Can I buy a bag with a tracker already included?
There are various options with in-built tracker systems. TUMI was one of the first to introduce a tracer system, and many of their bags allow customers to register their details on their tracer website. Some other luggage manufacturers offer Bluetooth connectivity.
