United Airlines brings back ice cream sundaes

The iconic Ice Cream Sundae Cart will return to United Airlines’ Business Class cabin, having been on ice since the start of the pandemic.

As airlines return towards a full in-flight dining service, the hugely popular post-meal service treat will return to the Polaris cabin on all international flights from February, having been replaced by pre-packaged ice cream offerings in the interim period.

Passengers on select flights out of San Francisco to destinations including Singapore, Sydney, Brisbane and Frankfurt have already tasted the delights of the returning ice cream cart, which is rolled out through the Polaris Business Class cabin at the end of the three-course meal service.

Vanilla ice cream is at the heart of the customisable dish, with passengers able to select toppings of their choice, including hot fudge, whipped cream, cherries and extra-naughty additions like M&Ms.

United Airlines is looking to bounce back from the pandemic with a strong 2023, having recently announced the largest purchase of widebody aircraft in U.S. commercial aviation history, with the order of 100 new Boeing 787 Dreamliners and the option to order 100 more.

The new aircraft will likely replace the airline’s ageing Boeing 767 and 777 fleets in a move which the airline claims will reduce carbon emissions by up to 25 per cent per seat in the process.

In total, 700 new narrow and widebody aircraft are expected by 2032, with United receiving more than two deliveries per week during 2023, increasing to three a week in 2024. This comes as more than 90 per cent of the airline’s existing international widebody fleet has been upgraded to include United’s Polaris Business Class cabin, with the remainder due for completion by the summer of 2023.
