Singapore's Changi Airport Terminal 5 to open in mid-2030s

Originally unveiled in 2013 and temporarily paused during the global COVID-19 pandemic, Singapore’s visionary Terminal 5 at Changi Airport is now advancing towards completion in the mid-2030s. As of 2025, construction is actively progressing, setting the stage for what will become one of the world’s most innovative airport terminals.

Occupying a vast 1,080-hectare footprint—equivalent to 667 football pitches—the Changi East expansion integrates adaptable infrastructure, enabling the terminal to operate as several interconnected sub-terminals. Informed by the latest public health learnings, T5 is engineered with advanced contactless technologies, robust air filtration, and modular spaces designed to mitigate future pandemic risks and ensure seamless, safe travel experiences.

Upon completion, Terminal 5 will join the ranks of the world’s largest airport terminals, with the capacity to accommodate approximately 50 million travelers each year. This monumental addition will reinforce Changi Airport’s status as a premier global aviation hub, renowned for its efficiency, innovation, and guest-centric service.

Since its inauguration on July 1, 1981, Changi Airport has transformed from a single-runway, single-terminal gateway into a multi-award-winning international nexus, celebrated for its impeccable operations and immersive amenities. The Changi East project features a new three-runway system, linked by nearly 40 kilometers of newly constructed taxiways, seamlessly connecting the expanded third runway to the core airport complex. This advanced runway network is expected to be fully operational by the latter half of the 2020s, providing ample capacity for future growth.

Terminal 5 is designed with sustainability and environmental stewardship at its core. The facility will leverage solar energy, intelligent building management platforms, and district cooling systems with integrated thermal storage. It is also being constructed to support next-generation green aviation solutions, including the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel, fixed ground power, and energy-efficient cooling for aircraft on stand. Travelers can anticipate a fully digitalized experience, with autonomous vehicles, smart baggage handling robots, and predictive operations—delivering both efficiency and comfort at every touchpoint.

Changi Airport continues to set the global benchmark for airport experiences, boasting a collection of prestigious accolades. Its iconic Jewel Changi Airport complex—with the record-setting 40-meter-tall HSBC Rain Vortex, surrounded by more than 2,000 varieties of tropical flora—remains a must-see attraction. The forthcoming Changi East and Terminal 5 developments are poised to elevate the airport’s reputation for luxury, innovation, and hospitality even further.

Changi Airport serves as the principal hub for Singapore Airlines and its low-cost carrier Scoot, anchoring Singapore’s position as a vital gateway between Asia, Europe, and the world.
