Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has once again elevated transatlantic travel by reinstating its direct service between Copenhagen and New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport after more than three decades away. This move, effective since early 2023, marks a significant milestone for the airline’s North American expansion and delivers a new level of choice for discerning travelers seeking premium connectivity between Scandinavia and the United States—a market that continues to surge in demand through 2025.
While SAS has long maintained a robust schedule from its Copenhagen hub to New York via Newark—as well as nonstop flights from Oslo and Stockholm—the reintroduction of the JFK route intensifies competition with Delta Air Lines, a SkyTeam member, for direct service into Manhattan’s most iconic airport. The Star Alliance carrier now provides an attractive alternative for both business and leisure flyers prioritizing seamless onward connections and a refined onboard experience.
The relaunch began with five weekly departures from Copenhagen to JFK’s Terminal 7, with the frequency ramped up to daily flights during peak summer travel and continuing into 2025. This schedule flexibility allows travelers to choose departures that best fit their itineraries while enjoying the reliability SAS is known for.
Flight SK919 leaves Copenhagen at 6:25 p.m., arriving at JFK at 9:30 p.m., operated by the state-of-the-art Airbus A321LR. This aircraft features 157 seats, including 22 fully lie-flat Business Class suites designed for optimal comfort and privacy. The return journey, SK920, departs JFK at 11 p.m. and lands in Copenhagen at 12:55 p.m. the following day. These timings are ideal for maximizing productivity and rest—key considerations for luxury travelers.
During high-demand periods, SAS upgrades the service to the larger Airbus A330-300, offering 262 seats and 32 next-generation lie-flat beds in Business Class. Flights depart Copenhagen at 7:20 p.m. and reach JFK at 10 p.m., with return flights leaving New York at 11:55 p.m. and arriving in Denmark at 1:45 p.m. the next day. The expanded premium cabin is a testament to SAS’s commitment to an elevated transatlantic experience, featuring the latest in Scandinavian design and wellness-focused amenities.
As of 2025, SAS operates approximately 130 weekly departures across 12 North American gateways, underlining its position as a leading transatlantic carrier within Star Alliance. The airline’s strategic focus on both business and leisure markets has been recognized with multiple industry awards for service excellence and sustainability initiatives.
