Qantas - Perth set to become 2nd biggest gateway after Sydney
Qantas and Perth Airport have finalized a transformative long-term partnership set to ignite a new era of premium travel and tourism for Western Australia. This landmark 12-year agreement will see an investment exceeding AUD3 billion in state-of-the-art terminal infrastructure and a new parallel runway, positioning Perth as a critical hub for both international and domestic routes.
Under the agreement, all Qantas and Jetstar operations will transition to a bespoke, next-generation terminal in the Airport Central precinct. The alliance, coupled with Qantas’ ongoing fleet modernization, is projected to catalyze significant job creation and sustained economic momentum for the region.
By the anticipated opening of the new terminal in 2031, Qantas and Jetstar aim to increase annual seat capacity through Perth by 4.4 million, enabling seamless connections for travelers across Australia and the globe.
Strategically located, the new hub will elevate inbound tourism and expand flight options for Australians heading to Asia, Africa, India, and Europe via Perth. The facility promises a premium, world-class experience, featuring frictionless transfers between domestic and international services, advanced biometric check-in, and automated baggage systems.
Qantas is collaborating with Perth Airport to unveil a multi-lounge zone, blending contemporary design with gourmet dining and wellness offerings tailored for discerning travelers. These lounges will set a new benchmark in comfort and exclusivity for both international and domestic guests.
With flagship routes such as Perth–London and Perth–Rome consistently ranking among Qantas’ most in-demand international flights, the enhanced connectivity is expected to attract hundreds of thousands of additional visitors annually. The upgraded network will also facilitate more convenient travel for overseas guests exploring broader Australia.
Following the successful launch of Perth–Paris in July and Jetstar’s newly inaugurated Asia routes this year, Qantas confirms that Perth is firmly on course to become its second largest international gateway after Sydney.
