Malaysia Airlines unveils new lightweight Business Class seats on its Boeing 737-800NG fleet

Malaysia Airlines has announced plans to introduce twelve new Business Class seats to 38 aircraft in its domestic and regional fleet of Boeing 737-800NGs (the fastest-selling aircraft in Boeing’s history). These will all appear on flights from Kuala Lumpur International Airport – one of Southeast Asia’s biggest hubs. The first re-fitted aircraft are due to take to the skies in late July 2022, with the remaining fleet due for completion by mid-2023.

New look Business Class

Resulting from customer survey feedback and focus group sessions during 2020, the slimmer and much lighter, leaner seats are configured in a 2-2- formation and feature a pitch of 39 inches (99 centimetres)  With clean white lines and an attractive blue leather Batik-designed upholstery – true to Malaysia Airlines’ heritage – these seats are a lightweight alternative to the predecessor with enhanced functionality. These new design seats also offset the carbon footprint with an overall reduction in weight of around 679 kilogrammes for each aircraft, which will improve fuel burn by around 8 percent per passenger.

Soft dividers replace the bulkhead cabin partitions. The seatback entertainment screens are also removed, and innovative wireless streaming of in-flight entertainment is available for passengers to stream content on their own devices.

A huge improvement on the current offering

The seats are ergonomically designed to provide greater comfort and feature a six-way adjustable headrest, a calf rest, coat hook, bottle holder, personal device holder with AC power, and USB-A and USB-C outlets.

The MHstudio in-flight entertainment system will provide passengers with total flexibility and control to stream a large selection of movies, television programmes, podcasts, music and online literature directly to their devices. Further accessibility will be introduced to MHstudio during the fourth quarter of 2022, enabling passengers to order duty-free shopping and in-flight snacks delivered directly to their seats.

Long-haul Business Class travellers on Malaysia Airlines will continue to enjoy the comfort and luxury of the fully enclosed Business Class Suites on the flagship Airbus A350-900. The standard Business Class seats are 22 inches (56 centimetres) wide with a pitch of 44 inches (112 centimetres) and a full-flat bed length of 78 inches (198 centimetres) on the A350-900 and A330-300 aircraft.
