The Lufthansa Group is introducing an Environmental Cost Surcharge. This is designed to cover some of the rising extra costs caused by new environmental regulations.
These include:
- A legal requirement for flights departing from European Union (EU) countries to use a blend that includes at least 2% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) from 1st January, 2025.
- Changes to the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS).
- Other environmental regulations, such as the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA).
The Environmental Cost Surcharge applies to all flights operated by Lufthansa Group airlines that depart from the 27 EU countries, as well as the UK, Norway and Switzerland.
The amount you pay will vary depending on your route and ticket type, ranging from €1 to €72. This surcharge will be added to all tickets booked from 26th June, for flights departing on or after 1st January, 2025. You'll find the exact cost detailed on the Lufthansa Group airlines' booking pages.
The Lufthansa Group invests heavily in new technologies each year, working with partners to develop sustainable aviation solutions that can benefit the wider industry. They've also been actively involved in global climate and weather research for many years. However, the airline group argues that they can't shoulder the ever-increasing costs of environmental regulations on their own. This new surcharge aims to recover some of the additional expenses they expect to incur in 2025.
The Lufthansa Group has ambitious climate protection goals, aiming to be carbon neutral by 2050. By 2030, they plan to halve their net CO₂ emissions compared to 2019 through a combination of reduction and offsetting measures. To achieve effective climate protection, they're focusing on:
- Modernising their fleet at an accelerated pace.
- Continuously optimising flight operations.
- Increasing their use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).
- Offering options for both leisure and business travellers to make their air travel or cargo transportation more sustainable.
The Lufthansa Group includes Lufthansa Airlines, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Eurowings and Brussels Airlines.
