Finnair has found an innovative way to give old crew uniforms a new purpose through recycling and upcycling - by transforming them into durable garden furniture like pots, tables, and benches.
Any uniform parts that are still in good condition are refurbished for reuse by employees but worn-out uniforms are sent to Finnish work-clothing manufacturer, Image Wear. The Hankkio-based Image Wear - which started life in the 1960s - combines shredded textiles from the old uniforms with recycled plastic particles, forming new composite materials.
Merja Lindberg, Finnair's uniform manager, emphasised the airline's dedication to sustainability by ensuring that their stylish and high-quality crew uniforms are designed to last for many years, allowing for refreshing and reusing.
The current cabin crew uniform, introduced in 2011 and designed by Ritva-Liisa Pohjalainen, features a combination of dark blue and white clothing.
