Finnair ends inflight duty free shopping

Finnair, a distinguished member of the Oneworld alliance, has officially ceased all onboard and advance retail sales of luxury goods, beauty products, and signature Finnish gifts as of spring 2025.

The curtain has now closed on in-flight duty free sales, which were available on select international routes until the end of February. Pre-order delivery continued through April 18, allowing travelers one last opportunity to acquire coveted items such as Marimekko amenity kits and Iittala glassware. With this transition, these exclusive products are no longer available for purchase in the skies or through pre-flight orders.

“Our guests' priorities have evolved, and inflight shopping has become less central to the travel experience,” shares Valtteri Helve, Finnair’s Head of Product Offering. “We initially halted duty free sales on intra-EU flights to support our sustainability and aircraft weight reduction goals, and this year, we have taken the next decisive step.”

To mark the end of an era, Finnair offered travelers a final incentive: a 40% discount on the 30 most popular catalogue products, available until the last day of onboard shopping. This exclusive offer was designed as a farewell to longstanding retail favorites.

Historically, inflight shopping was available on Finnair’s long-haul services and flights to destinations such as the Canary Islands, Dubai, Egypt, Iceland, Israel, Switzerland, Turkey, and the UK. Pre-ordering was possible on flights exceeding two hours, with the exception of the Doha route, which did not feature travel retail options.

Despite this shift, Finland’s flag carrier continues to enhance its food and beverage service onboard, with ongoing innovation in curated menus and premium drinks. The airline remains committed to elevating the passenger experience through thoughtful service improvements.

Finnair joins other leading airlines—such as Qantas, United, KLM, and American Airlines—that have also phased out inflight retail in recent years. Meanwhile, industry speculation persists that Cathay Pacific may revive its shopping program in the near future.
