This is not a joke or a publicity stunt.
Finnair has begun inviting travelers to participate in a voluntary weighing process at select departure gates, where both passengers and their carry-on luggage are discreetly weighed together. This initiative is entirely optional and handled with strict confidentiality, designed to help Finnair update its aircraft weight and balance calculations in line with the latest safety standards. For each departure, the airline must ensure the total aircraft weight—including passengers, fuel, checked bags, cargo, catering provisions, water, and more—remains within regulated limits for a safe journey.
Most airlines use standard passenger and hand baggage weights provided by aviation authorities, or base calculations on their own certified studies. In compliance with European Aviation Safety Authority (EASA) guidelines, Finnair has been conducting its own weight surveys approximately every five years to maintain accuracy. The last assessment was performed in 2018, making this 2025 update essential for regulatory compliance and operational safety.
Finnair emphasizes that all weight data collected is anonymized and never linked to personal details such as passenger names or booking references. Only aggregate data is visible to authorized staff at the weighing stations, ensuring total privacy for participants.
New average weight figures will be submitted to Traficom, Finland’s Transport and Communications Agency, during the July-September 2025 reporting period. Once endorsed, these figures will underpin Finnair’s load and balance calculations for all flights through 2030. The weighing stations are currently operational at select gates within Helsinki Airport, focusing on a cross-section of both European and intercontinental departures.
During the process, participants’ combined weight, age, gender, and travel class are recorded, with no personally identifiable information collected at any stage. Finnair has highlighted the importance of capturing a diverse sample—spanning both business and leisure travelers—to ensure the most representative and precise data set for aircraft weight calculations. The airline notes a positive response from previous campaigns, with high rates of voluntary participation.
