Emirates to use SAF from Singapore

Emirates has initiated the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for flights departing from Singapore Changi Airport, marking its first SAF investment in Asia.

Around 3.3 million litres of blended SAF have recently been incorporated into Changi Airport's fuelling system.

Emirates is  tracking the delivery of SAF into the fuelling systems, ensuring the environmental benefits are properly accounted for and assigned using standard industry methodologies. Earlier this year, the airline collaborated with Neste to supply 2.6 million litres of neat SAF to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport's fuelling systems.

Neste's SAF is produced from sustainably sourced, 100% renewable waste and residue raw materials, such as used cooking oil and animal fat waste. The SAF in this agreement is compatible with existing Emirates aircraft and airport fuelling infrastructure, reducing lifecycle carbon emissions (CO2) by up to 80% compared to conventional jet fuel when used in its pure form.

Emirates' strategy includes exploring SAF use wherever available in its network, sharing emissions reductions with corporate customers and freight forwarders, collaborating on long-term SAF projects, and supporting SAF ventures in the UAE for potential future supply at its hub.

Airlines News - Emirates to use SAF from Singapore

Emirates currently operates flights with SAF from Amsterdam, London Heathrow, Paris, Lyon, and Oslo, and integrated SAF into the fuelling systems at its Dubai hub late last year. In 2023, Emirates became the first airline to operate two landmark demonstration flights from Dubai on the Boeing 777 and A380 with 100% SAF in one engine, in partnership with Neste and other dedicated partners, supporting future certification for 100% drop-in SAF for commercial operations. Currently, SAF is approved for use in all aircraft in blends of up to 50% with conventional jet fuel.

The airline has committed USD 200 million for R&D projects aimed at reducing the impact of fossil fuels in commercial aviation and recently became an industrial partner of the Aviation Impact Accelerator (AIA) at the University of Cambridge. Emirates plans to actively share its knowledge and data to help develop innovative tools and solutions for reducing aviation’s long-term environmental impact.

Emirates is a member of the Solent Cluster in the UK, focusing on low carbon investments and the potential creation of an SAF plant capable of producing up to 200,000 tonnes annually by 2032. Additionally, Emirates is a founding participant in the UAE research consortium Air-CRAFT, dedicated to developing, producing, and scaling SAF technologies for the aviation industry.
