Emirates to use SAF from Singapore

Emirates has officially commenced the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for its departures out of Singapore Changi Airport, marking a milestone as its inaugural SAF initiative in Asia. Approximately 3.3 million litres of blended SAF have been integrated into Changi Airport’s refueling infrastructure, setting a new benchmark for the region’s sustainable aviation efforts.

Through advanced tracking systems, Emirates ensures full transparency and accountability for the SAF volumes added, using globally recognized sustainability protocols. Earlier this year, the airline partnered with Neste to deliver 2.6 million litres of pure SAF to the fueling network at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, reinforcing its commitment to decarbonizing aviation.

Neste’s SAF is derived exclusively from renewable waste and residue feedstocks, such as recycled cooking oils and animal fat by-products. The fuel supplied under this partnership is fully compatible with Emirates’ current fleet and ground fueling systems, and delivers up to 80% reduction in lifecycle CO2 emissions compared to traditional jet fuel when utilized in its unblended form.

Emirates continues to expand its SAF strategy across its global network, collaborating with corporate partners and freight clients to share carbon reduction benefits, investing in long-term SAF initiatives, and supporting innovation projects in the UAE aimed at developing a sustainable supply for its Dubai hub.

Currently, Emirates operates flights utilizing SAF from major European gateways including Amsterdam, London Heathrow, Paris, Lyon, and Oslo. The carrier also began incorporating SAF into its Dubai fueling systems last year. In 2023, Emirates made history by conducting demonstration flights from Dubai using the Boeing 777 and A380, each powered by 100% SAF in one engine, in cooperation with Neste and leading industry experts. This groundbreaking effort supports the path toward future certification of 100% drop-in SAF for commercial use. Present regulations permit SAF blends of up to 50% with conventional jet fuel across all Emirates aircraft.

The airline has pledged USD 200 million towards research and development initiatives aimed at minimizing the environmental impact of fossil fuels in commercial aviation. Emirates has also joined the Aviation Impact Accelerator (AIA) at the University of Cambridge as an industry partner, actively contributing operational data and expertise to foster next-generation solutions for sustainable flight.

Emirates is a key member of the Solent Cluster in the UK, which is advancing low-carbon projects and is planning to establish an SAF production facility with a targeted annual output of 200,000 tonnes by 2032. Additionally, Emirates is a founding member of the Air-CRAFT research consortium in the UAE, dedicated to advancing SAF technology and scaling its deployment within the aviation sector.
