Emirates has announced that it will fly with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at London Heathrow Airport.
The Dubai-based airline has received a supply of over 3,000 tonnes of neat SAF from Shell Aviation. It will be blended with conventional jet fuel and be delivered into the airport's fuelling infrastructure network until the end of summer 2024.
This marks the first time Emirates will use SAF to power some of its flights at London Heathrow, and it represents the largest volume of SAF the airline has purchased to date. Emirates is participating in London Heathrow’s SAF Incentive Programme, which aims to make SAF more affordable and accessible for airlines operating at the airport.
The airline says it will meticulously account for, track, and trace the delivery of SAF at Heathrow, ensuring its sustainability attributes are documented through robust reporting methodologies. The SAF purchased will be seamlessly integrated into the existing airport fuelling infrastructure and aircraft jet engines. In its neat form, SAF can reduce lifecycle carbon emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional jet fuel.
Emirates currently operates flights from Amsterdam, Paris, Lyon and Oslo with SAF. Last year, the airline collaborated with Shell Aviation to supply SAF into Dubai Airport fuelling systems for the first time. The airline plans to work with local partners at Singapore Changi Airport for the supply of SAF through the airport’s fuelling systems.
Just last week, Virgin Atlantic released the positive results of using 100% SAF after its London to New York flight in November 2023. Of 100% SAF, it stated: “If you make it, we will fly it”
