Air New Zealand has officially confirmed that it will integrate BETA Technologies’ ALIA, a state-of-the-art electric aircraft, into its Mission Next Gen Aircraft initiative. This milestone underscores Air New Zealand’s commitment to pioneering sustainable aviation, with the ALIA set to become the airline’s first electric aircraft for commercial demonstration flights, scheduled to commence in 2026. This strategic step marks the beginning of Air New Zealand’s transition toward a zero-emissions fleet.
The ALIA, powered entirely by advanced battery technology, is central to Air New Zealand’s decarbonization strategy. Over the past two years, the airline has worked alongside more than 30 industry partners, ultimately selecting four organizations to accelerate the deployment of cutting-edge aircraft. The ALIA represents the program’s inaugural commercial acquisition, reflecting a significant leap in green aviation for the Southern Hemisphere.
In collaboration with New Zealand Post, Air New Zealand will initially utilize the ALIA for cargo operations. The airline is currently evaluating proposals from airports across Aotearoa to determine the optimal inaugural route for this groundbreaking service.
Key highlights of the ALIA and Air New Zealand’s sustainable aviation plans:
- The version ordered is the conventional take-off and landing (CTOL) ALIA.
- Air New Zealand has secured one ALIA with options for two more, plus rights to acquire an additional 20 units in the future.
- Test flights have demonstrated a range of 480 km; initial commercial routes are anticipated to be approximately 150 km.
- Typical cruising altitudes for the ALIA will range from 1,500 to 3,000 meters.
- The aircraft weighs three tonnes, measures over 12 meters in length, and can reach speeds up to 270 km/h.
- Battery recharge times are projected at 40–60 minutes using rapid charging infrastructure.
- All operations will be subject to rigorous certification and safety protocols set by the New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority before public service launch.
