Air New Zealand to fly electric aircraft

Air New Zealand has announced its selection of BETA Technologies' ALIA, a next-generation electric aircraft, for its Mission Next Gen Aircraft program. The airline aims to introduce a commercial demonstrator by 2026, with the ALIA expected to join its fleet that year. This move marks Air New Zealand's first step in transitioning to lower-emission aircraft.

The ALIA, a battery-powered all-electric plane, is part of a broader effort by Air New Zealand to decarbonize aviation. The airline has collaborated with 30 organizations over an 18-month period, ultimately choosing four partners to help achieve its vision of using next-generation aircraft for commercial flights by 2026. The ALIA is the program's first commercial order.

In a partnership with New Zealand Post, Air New Zealand plans to initially deploy the ALIA for cargo services. The airline is currently selecting a route through an expression of interest process involving various airports across Aotearoa (New Zealand).
