Air India to Update Widebody Cabins
Air India is undertaking a comprehensive overhaul of its Boeing 787 and 777 widebody cabins, backed by a strategic USD400 million investment aimed at elevating the passenger experience to global standards.
Now under the Tata Group’s stewardship, Air India is advancing its integration with Vistara, with the full merger expected to conclude in 2024. This union, bolstered by a significant capital infusion and equity stake from Singapore Airlines, positions Air India-Vistara as India’s flagship airline group and a formidable player in the international aviation landscape.
Travelers can anticipate the debut of a new Premium Economy cabin—an entirely fresh offering for Air India—across all long-haul aircraft. This move responds to growing demand for an intermediate class that blends comfort and value, aligning Air India with leading global carriers.
Business Class will be completely reimagined, featuring state-of-the-art lie-flat suites, enhanced privacy, and the latest in-flight entertainment technology. The outdated 2-3-2 seating will be replaced by direct aisle access for every passenger, bringing Air India’s premium product in line with the world’s best.
The flagship Boeing 777s will continue to offer First Class, though the extent of the product revamp—whether a full redesign or high-end soft product refresh—remains closely guarded.
Air India has confirmed that its newly retrofitted fleet will begin operating in the second half of 2024, aligning with the Vistara integration. Meanwhile, the carrier is leveraging short-term fleet enhancements by leasing 30 Airbus and Boeing aircraft, including Boeing 777-200LRs from Delta Air Lines. These jets feature Delta One Suites, immediately elevating the Business Class experience for Air India’s discerning clientele during the transition period.
