SWISS unveils its new Premium Economy Class

Switzerland’s national carrier has revealed its new Premium Economy Class experience – which is set to take to the skies towards the end of this year. It is not just the seats that have been enhanced – there is also an upgrade in the food & beverage offering, increased baggage allowance, priority boarding and a special amenity kit.

It has been three decades since Premium Economy was first introduced by an airline – with Taiwan’s Eva Air taking the lead. SWISS has been without this cabin class but has finally acquiesced.

The new SWISS Premium Economy Class cabin will be gradually installed onto the airline’s twelve long-haul Boeing 777-300ERs. Each aircraft will feature 24 Premium Economy Class seats and the airline hopes that all the 777s will be fitted-out by the start of Summer 2022.

The Premium Economy seat is integrated into a fixed backshell

The new seat – made in Germany but with a cover that is produced in Switzerland - is simple to recline. It is integrated into a fixed backshell and is wider than an Economy Class seat, between 46 and 48 centimetres (≈ 18-19 inches), compared to 43.4 centimetres (≈ 17 inches). Seat pitch has been extended from the 78.7 centimetres (≈ 31 inches) in Economy Class to 99 centimetres (≈ 39 inches). In addition to more legroom, the seat is equipped with a fold-out leg rest. Premium Economy seats will feature individual 15.6-inch inflight screens coupled with noise-reducing headphones. Electronic devices can be charged using the seat’s in-built USB socket. Each passenger will receive an amenity kit – filled with flight necessities made from sustainable materials.

SWISS’s inflight cuisine has also been specially tailored to the new class of travel. Premium Economy travellers will be offered a refreshing elderberry welcome drink and will be able to choose from three hot meals. The selection will include a dish from the award-winning SWISS Taste of Switzerland inflight culinary programme, together with a vegetarian option supplied by Zürich’s Hiltl, the world’s oldest vegetarian restaurant.
