"Factors that initiate motion sickness
- genetic disposition
- intact vestibular system
- poor training in the sense of a lack of experience with movement stimuli
- Influence of drugs (also nicotine and alcohol)
Recommendations and medication prophylaxis
- Sensitive individuals should consult with their physicians prior to flight and obtain medications
- Reserve a seat in the middle of the aircraft
- Excluding contraindications for using scopolamine =skopoderm - e.g. in patch form for older children and adults
- Apply the patch about 6 hours prior to flight or the night before departure
Alternatively, preparations with the ingredient dimenhydrinate =Amosyt, Calma, Arlevert can be considered and used like scopolamine as a therapeutic in the event of a rapid treatment is needed.
Although a large number of passengers on ships in turbulent seas develop significant symptoms, only relatively few passengers on modern airliners develop such significant motion sickness that intervention is necessary.
Recommendations and interventions for motions sickness during flight
- Sustain upright postion expecially during turbulence with significant vertical components
- Upright head position, optimally at a 30 degrees forward inclination
- With supine, the head should be elevated
- Avoid significant head-down position with the face down
- Avoid alcohol and nicotine (nicotine patches if needed)
- Avoid reading or working on a laptop computer
- Avoid head movements during turbulence
- Visual focus on a fixation point outside the aircraft, alternatively, closing eyes
- With nausea and vomiting, metoclopramide = primperan, finns som tablett, supp, iv"
