The Surrey - CURRENTLY CLOSED

A BusinessClass.com Verified Hotel

THIS HOTEL IS CURRENTLY CLOSED

The Surrey is located within New York’s prestigious Upper East Side, close to boutiques, shops and restaurants, Museum Mile and Central Park. A Beaux-Arts building built in 1926 as a residence hotel, it served as the private home away from home for such luminaries as Bette Davis, Claudette Colbert and JFK. Today this discreet address is home to cognoscenti travellers who adore its privacy and the interior design envisaged by Lauren Rottet to offer that residential appeal. Décor highlights include coffered ceilings, limestone walls, mouldings, marble archways and marble floors – all in a restrained, almost monochromatic colour palette. To give added lustre, The Surrey’s art collection which contains both historic and contemporary pieces, some of which was commissioned by the property, can be seen throughout the property. There are 189 chicly designed salons or rooms, including 34 suites, a Penthouse and a Presidential Suite, ranging in size from 31 square metres for the entry level Deluxe Salon, 41 square metres for the Studio Suite with a private outdoor terrace and fireplace moving up to 87 square metres for the Two Bedroom Suite. The premium accommodation includes the one-, two- and three-bedroom Ultra Suites (61 – 128 square metres), offering separate living rooms and petite kitchens. The 195 square metre Penthouse Suite is grander still and features an incredible wrap-around terrace, with spacious living, sleeping and dining spaces as well as the original brass and copper embossed door from the original Surrey hotel – now being used as the main entrance to this room. The 139 square metre, one- or two-bedroom Presidential Suite is simply an elegantly attired, light and airy apartment with a private terrace; a living room with a fireplace and a baby grand piano; a dining room for up to ten people; a wet bar with seating and a fully equipped kitchen for those midnight snacks.

All the salons offer hand-crafted DUX beds by Duxiana; Sferra bedding; bedside room controls; high tech media and audio plus custom designed Beaux-Arts / Art Deco furnishings including hand-painted armoires, walnut cabinets and nightstands. All the bathrooms are dressed in white marble with Pratesi cotton terry robes and Diptyque bathroom amenities.  For dining, head to the one Michelin starred, all day dining Café Boulud by Chef Daniel Boulud serving classically inspired French cuisine prepared with his inimitable style with brunch enjoyed on the weekend. For relaxing over a drink or three, try the elegant Bar Pleiades, with innovative cocktails by Darryl Chan served in a cocktail lounge come bar, all black and white lacquer finishes, quilted walls and French doors. Live jazz is played on Monday and Friday evenings. For guest use only, there is access to a private Roof Garden on the 17th floor, open in the summer months and offering a landscaped oasis with a view to die for. For keeping trim on the road, there is a fully equipped Fitness Centre with room key access 24/7 whilst the intimate Cornelia Spa offers the ultimate space to decompress with custom designed treatments within private spa suites or within your own room.
