Hassler Roma

Review of Hassler Roma

BusinessClass.com review by Varun Sharma

Overlooking the glorious Spanish Steps, Hassler Roma is one of the Eternal City’s best-positioned luxury hotels. Hassler Roma has 87 guestrooms & suites packed with contemporary conveniences, while also retaining a classic look and feel. The hotel is over 125 years old and its reputation for flawless service is legendary.

Hassler Roma boasts the Michelin-starred restaurant Imagò. Located on the sixth floor of the hotel, Imagò has been wowing Rome and her visitors for almost a decade with its Italian-fusion cuisine coupled with unbeatable panoramic views over the city.

The hotel has an interesting mix of Art Deco and classic Italian design - both bold but pleasing on the eye. One classic throwback that wins merit is the original 19th-century concierge desk in the hotel lobby, where anything and everything is arranged for guests. The Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona and Villa Borghese are all within walking distance.

The hotel is owned by its President and General Manager Roberto E. Wirth, fifth generation of the famous Swiss hotelier family who became co-owners of the hotel with the Hasslers in the 1920s. He is often seen in the hotel lobby, welcoming guests - as the family always has – with warmth and charm.

Location

10/10

Enjoying a privileged position in the heart of the Eternal City, Hassler Roma sits atop the Spanish Steps, neighbouring the spectacular 16th-century Trinità dei Monti church with its distinctive twin bell towers. The Spanish Steps’ Travertine white marble stairs lead down to arguably the most famous square in Rome, the Piazza di Spagna - Spanish Square and its elegant Fontana della Barcaccia. Hassler Roma is near to the stunning Pantheon, St. Peter’s Basilica, Trevi Fountain and further afield, the Colosseum.

Via Veneto, Via dei Condotti and the city’s most fashionable boutiques are within temptingly short walking distance with Via Borgognona and Via Frattina unmissable stops on any fashionista’s itinerary.

It is also just a short stroll to the beautiful Villa Borghese gardens, a six-kilometre-wide park of tree-lined lanes, great for a relaxing morning or afternoon exploration. Find the art-filled Galleria Borghese and 16th century Villa Medici - currently the French Academy of Art, an amphitheatre - a copy of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London, an aviary, petting zoo, fountains, and colourful flowerbeds. There is also a small but perfectly formed lake complete with rowing boats, temples, statues, and cafés.

Piazza Navona, located a 15-minute-walk away, was built on the site of the Stadium of Domitian/Circus Agonalis in the 1st century AD - and represents a significant example of Baroque Roman architecture. The Pantheon, St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican, St. Agnes Church in Piazza Navona are just some of the sights you can see from Hassler Roma’s terraces and windows.

Taxis are available at the front of the hotel or Concierge can arrange for chauffeured cars and car rentals. Driving around Rome - if you have not done so before - is an experience, and should only be done by those with nerves of steel.

Rome’s Fiumicino Airport is around half an hour away by car. The main Roma Termini train station is just 15 minutes away.

Hassler Roma’s accommodation is stylish with 87 individually and beautifully decorated rooms, among them 21 sumptuous suites and many with exquisite, expansive views over the Spanish Steps, the Villa Borghese gardens, the spectacular rooftops of Rome or the basilica of St. Peter’s Church.  All rooms and suites are luxurious, elegant, and comfortable, including up-to-the-minute modern conveniences and amenities, individually designed and each with its own distinct look and all emulating the sophisticated, elegant, and historic atmosphere the hotel is famous for.

A private butler is available to make guests’ stay as comfortable as possible. A special key card allows direct and private elevator access to reach the 8th floor with no stops in-between.

The Penthouse Villa Medici Suite on the 7th floor features a modern style with classical accents. The private 160 square metre terrace with astounding views is the perfect place for a late afternoon cocktail. Presidential Suite San Pietro on the 6th floor is named after the view it commands, over St. Peter’s Basilica. The sitting room has an antique 1780s desk and there is a dining area, a bedroom, a main bathroom, and guest-bathroom. An exclusive terrace runs along the entire apartment featuring chaise-longues in an outdoor setting - perfect for enjoying the spectacular view of the Spanish Steps and Eternal City.

Style

8/10

Hassler Rome’s accommodation offers opulent style with rooms in jewel-like colours filled with art and antiques. Venetian lamps and chandeliers from Murano create a romantic glow and 19th century mirrors reflect the light and glimpses of the rooms’ superb views. Other decorative treasures include French crystal, Limoges porcelains, tapestries and appliqués. Walls and ceilings are decorated with stunning trompe l’oeil paintings, mosaics, and frescoes.

Restaurants & Bars

10/10

Hassler Roma’s crown jewel for dining is Imàgo, its one Michelin-starred rooftop restaurant. Located on the 6th floor, it offers superb panoramic views of Rome with soft music and serving refined contemporary Italian cuisine. Chef Andrea Antonini’s Italian fusion dishes are a delight and include ‘riso, scampi and porcini’, a delicious mix of rice, prawns and mushrooms, while the millefeuille with strawberries, vanilla and balsamic for desert is divine.

The hotel’s renowned Salone Eva is a popular meeting place for guests and locals for coffee and drinks.

Hassler Bistro, the place for business lunches, afternoon tea or a light post-theatre meal, is where cocktails are also enjoyed in winter while in summer the peaceful outdoor Palm Court opens, set in a lovely shaded tranquil garden which offers Roman dishes, served all day by Head Chef Marcello Romano.

Cocktails and aperitifs are also enjoyed at the cosy Hassler Bar – resplendent with its russet leather seating and wooden panelled walls.

Next door sister property Il Palazzetto Wine Bar offers more views over the Spanish Steps. The Verushka, the house drink blending pomegranate juice and Champagne is delizioso.

Sustainability

One of the first hotels in Rome to offer electric cars to pick up guests from the airport and a complimentary shuttle down The Spanish Steps into the city, is just one of the ways Hassler Roma strives to uphold its green credentials and reduce its carbon footprint.
