Conrad London St James

Review of Conrad London St James

BusinessClass.com review by Varun Sharma

When you see the name Conrad, you know you will be well looked after in the inimitable style of the Hilton brand for either business or leisure stays. Their Conrad St James property is located slap bang in the middle of Royal and Political London and features 256 comfortably appointed luxury guest rooms and suites including their signature Conrad Suite. Children are particularly welcomed here with the one-bedroom suite or the connecting rooms perfect for family travel and toys are offered on arrival.

Food wise, The Pem Restaurant is an art deco inspired space with a menu designed by Michelin-starred chef, Sally Abé, taking the basic fundamentals of classic British cuisine and elevating it by celebrating flavours and ingredients in her own special way. The Blue Boar Pub, meanwhile, also overseen by Sally, is a key local London watering hole in “Westminster Village”, a stylish take on the neighbourhood British pub. The Hedgerow is, by contrast, a light, glamorous space, perfect for a coffee, afternoon tea or an innovative cocktail or two with the Orchard Room, as the name might suggest, serving Afternoon Tea in an abundantly floral setting, flooded with natural daylight.

Work off any pounds gained by stretching your legs at nearby Green Park or by heading for the 24/7 health and fitness centre at the property.

The latter family rooms feature special children’s amenities, bed linens, bean bags plus a selection of treats.  The King Executive Room (36 square metres) enjoys access to the Executive Lounge. Guests who have an early arrival or late departure may take advantage of the Lounge’s shower and changing facilities to freshen up.

There are six categories of suite from the Junior at 40 square metres to the Conrad at 123 square metres, the hotel’s premier accommodation.  All enjoy access to the Executive Lounge which offers complimentary drinks and light bites throughout the day, breakfast and evening cocktails with canapés.

The Junior Suites enjoy an open plan layout with a lounge area separated from the sleeping area by a cleverly designed room divider incorporating TVs and a working desk. The One-Bedroom suite at 54 square metres of space, enjoys a separate lounge/dining area with large windows offering an abundance of light.

Moving up to the One-Bedroom Deluxe suite and there is a separate bedroom and living/dining area with a convenient guest cloakroom off the lounge with 58 square metres of space. These rooms can be connected to an additional room to extend into spacious two-bedroom suites with an extra bathroom.

Some repeat guests enjoy the two-floor layout of the One-Bedroom Deluxe Duplex suites with living areas and an extra guest cloakroom downstairs and the master bedroom and ensuite upstairs. The Two-Bedroom Suite is pretty spacious with 82 square metres of living space, sleeping up to five guests. This suite can be extended by the addition of a connecting King Deluxe and King Superior room to accommodate up to nine guests.

A private lift and entrance will take you to the hotel’s premier and signature suite – the One Bedroom Conrad Suite at a whopping 123 square metres of living space. Service & Facilities

8/10

There is a compact 24/7 health and fitness centre featuring a range of Life Fitness cardiovascular and strength training equipment. For the best running routes in the capital, check in with the concierge.

Pets are welcome at the hotel for medium sized dogs or cats of up to 15 kilograms.

Style

9/10

Behind a stately 19th century façade, formerly Government Offices, lies an unexpectedly light, bright and contemporary luxury hotel catering to both business and leisure guests. The custom commissioned artworks help anchor the property to London with some pieces adding a light touch and link to the Palace of Westminster and our political masters.

Part of the Hilton chain, guests at the Conrad Hilton St James are assured of a high standard of room amenities but another clever move is the recent switch of restaurant style overseen by noted chef Sally Abé, bringing in a classic London pub in the form of the Blue Boar Pub, a dark mysterious main restaurant and the elegant, feminine style of The Hedgerow, a rather glamorous and gorgeous blush pink and creamy oasis, perfect for ladies who lunch to enjoy a light bite, a coffee or a clutch of innovative cocktails. These are the most perfect of bolt holes for savvy Londoners looking for something a little different in Westminster Village.

Restaurants & Bars

9/10

The Pem Restaurant is an elegant space inspired by art deco with a touch of Asia, all dark woods and luscious reds, privacy lent by wooden room dividers. Menus here at the hotel are overseen by acclaimed Michelin-starred chef, Sally Abé. Her sense of fun is reflected in the menus which offers a range of quintessentially British classics, re-thought and re-presented in her distinct style. Alongside, there is a complementary wine list with a range of fine wines and eclectic choices from independent producers.

The Blue Boar Pub offers Westminster Village its very own neighbourhood public house, a contemporary take on a British pub, complete with a menu of pub dining. Expect quintessential British classics with a twist, snacks and Sunday roasts. serving a classic pub menu with a twist alongside local craft beers, creative cocktails and an extensive range of spirits.

The Hedgerow meanwhile is a glamorous, feminine space of blush pink and creams with a sweeping marbled bar and abundant greenery. With a cocktail menu devised by top mixologist Gregorio Soriente, his innovative creations are crafted using British botanicals and fruits. Open throughout the day for morning coffees, light snacks and afternoon tea, this is definitely a space for the “ladies who lunch”.  An equally beautiful venue awash with stunning floral decorations and a relaxed ambience is The Orchard Room serving elegant Afternoon Teas full of sweet and savoury delights. The glass roof allows light to flood this crisp, contemporary space.

What We Love

  • Blue Boar Pub: There has been a “ye olde inne” on this site since the 14th century. The latest incarnation of the Blue Boar opened in May 2021. It is a cross between a bar, a “country” pub and a casual restaurant – something for everyone. While there is a street entrance, it also very much part of the hotel. The menu is put together by Sally Abé – who won a Michelin star in a gastropub – so you know it will be excellent! The atmosphere is as delicious as the service … and cocktails! There is even a Division Bell … a nudge to any MPs who may be drinking or dining - to go and vote in Parliament.
  • The Art: From the Blue Boar to the hotel’s lobby to the Pem (restaurant), the Conrad St James features a wonderfully eclectic art collection. Look out for the Gerald Scarfe cartoons and the Simon Bingle busts of Prime Ministers. My favourite is Evil Ed and Dan Robotic’s “The House Always Wins” – an art instillation featuring superheroes and supervillains sitting in the House of Commons … arguing rather fighting!
  • Welcome: A smile can turn a bad day around or indeed make a day! The Conrad has some of the friendliest Staff I have come across in London. Unpretentious service with a smile … lovely.

What They Love

  • Location: The Conrad St James, London sits neatly in the heart of the Westminster Village. It can be found close to St James’s Tube Station (Zone 1) and St James’s Park. If you are looking for a luxury hotel close to the pomp & circumstance – the pageantry -  that makes London so special, look no further than the Conrad. The area is incredibly safe and my wonderful Colleagues are on hand to advise on anything & everything to do with Westminster.
  • History: the hotel itself is located in the former Queen Anne’s Chambers – dating back to the 19th-century. The Conrad St James is entwined with the local history. Whitehall including Downing Street, Westminster Cathedral, Buckingham Palace, and Horse Guards Parade – the very “Best of British” are all within walking distance of the hotel. While the Conrad is a contemporary hotel – it blends in beautifully with the magnificence and history of its surroundings.
  • The Pem: of course, I adore all the restaurants and bars in the hotel but The Pem Restaurant is quite special indeed. The classic British menu – with a twist – has been created by Michelin-star winning chef Sally Abé. The dishes are exquisite and when married with the wines selected by our sommeliers – James Shaw and Valeriya Toteva, the dining experience is among the finest in London.
