MINNEAPOLIS, Jan. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Northwest Airlines (Nasdaq: NWAC) announced today that it will inaugurate nonstop service between Minneapolis/St. Paul and Oslo, Norway on May 1, 1999.

The service will operate daily with Northwest DC10 aircraft, departing the Twin Cities at 6:30 p.m. and arriving in Oslo at 9:50 a.m. the following day. From Oslo, Northwest will offer convenient code-share service with Braathens, a Norwegian airline, to more than a dozen cities in Norway and Sweden. Braathens is Norway's largest domestic carrier with extensive operations also in Sweden. Braathens is a partner in the Northwest/KLM Royal Dutch Airlines global alliance. Northwest and Braathens will file for code-share service approval with the U.S. Department of Transportation.

"This is wonderful news," said Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura. "Oslo is an important route from the Twin Cities, and I am very interested in expanding every opportunity for all Minnesotans to travel and do business around the world."

"Northwest will be the only U.S. airline to operate nonstop flights to Oslo," said John Dasburg, president and chief executive officer. "The new route reaffirms Northwest's commitment to offer Minneapolis/St. Paul numerous international nonstop travel opportunities. Northwest provides Minnesotans and travelers throughout the upper Midwest convenient service to points throughout North America, Europe and Asia and now we are pleased to add this nonstop to Norway."

Northwest will offer daily return service. The flight will depart Oslo at 1:20 p.m. and arrive in the Twin Cities at 3:15 p.m. The service will bring thousands of tourists from Norway and Sweden to Minnesota and boost the state's tourism industry.

"Northwest's new route and our code-share agreement will strengthen Braathens service to and from North America," said Erik G. Braathen, president and chief executive officer. "Our customers can enjoy nonstop service to Minnesota and take advantage of convenient connections to points throughout the country with Northwest's extensive Twin Cities hub. Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport has one of the newest and most convenient international arrival facilities in the United States."

Northwest and KLM passengers will enjoy all the benefits of "seamless" service when traveling beyond Oslo to other points in Norway and Sweden on Braathens. Benefits include issuance of all boarding passes and luggage tags at initial check-in and credit for all mileage in Northwest's WorldPerks free travel plan when traveling on any Braathens flight.

The new Minneapolis/St. Paul-Oslo service will mark Northwest return to Norway. The airline operated Twin Cities-Oslo-Stockholm service and New York- Oslo-Stockholm flights in the early 1980s.
