Lufthansa Group has unveiled a brand new business class seat that will become standard across all A320 aircraft in its fleet.

But don’t get too excited just yet. The business class seat, which will be installed on all new Airbus A320 Family aircraft deliveries starting in 2019, is, in fact, the same as its economy seat. This is common practice on short-haul routes within Europe.

The seat will be installed will be present on Lufthansa, SWISS and Austrian Airlines short- and medium-haul routes.

The only real between business class and economy seats on these routes will be that the business class seat can recline up to a 26-degree angle, while economy seats will have a fixed 20-degree recline.

The business class cabin will also keep the middle seat in a row empty to afford passengers more privacy.

The seat features “ergonomic pressure distribution and fully-structured seat upholstery” in order to increase passenger comfort, the group said. Meanwhile, a slim backrest maximises space for passengers.

The exact width or pitch has not been disclosed as of yet.

The focus in the development of the new seat was also aimed at reducing weight and maintenance costs. After several preliminary talks, customer tests and quality audits, the Italian manufacturer Geven won the contract for the production of the seats.
