At the end of March 2015, Marriott surreptitiously opened its first hotel in Italy - JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa, located on Isola delle Rose (Island of Roses) outside Venice.

The hotel has 250 rooms designed by the architectural firm Matteo Thun & Partners, and is a combination of modern design while trying to retain the unique atmosphere of the island. The aim has been to make the island a destination in itself.

JW Marriott is located on a private island, Isola delle Rose (Island of Roses), which is 16 hectares in size. The island is accessible by boat and takes about 15 minutes from central Venice. On the island are several gardens along with a beautiful landscape of tranquility and relaxation. The vegetation on the island is also used as ingredients for the hotel's bars and restaurants, for example, olives from a large olive grove. The island also has a wine academy and a cooking school. The hotel, and its 250 rooms, are divided into several different buildings and sections, the largest being ‘The Hotel’ with 191 rooms, constructed with glass walls. Each room has a private balcony overlooking the garden. ‘La Residenzia’ opens in April, with 12 rooms all built in a Mediterranean style with parquet flooring and access to the private gardens. In April,  ‘L’Uliveto’ will also open, complete with 26 rooms with views towards the olive groves. At the end of April, ‘La Maisonette’ will open, offering 20 suites, all with a private terrace and garden, and some with private pools. Finally, there is ‘La Villa Rose’, a private villa with two bedrooms, swimming pool and private garden. Joint facilities at the hotel include a large spa (the largest in Venice), an infinity rooftop pool and four restaurants. For families with children there is a children's pool and a children's club. The rooms at the JW Marriott Venice will cost from 395 euros (£286) per night according to the Marriott. The formal inauguration takes place on June 24th.
