It is now clear that Lufthansa will receive delivery of its first Airbus A350 aircraft by the end of 2016. The first aircraft will be based in Munich, while the remaining 24 ordered aircraft will be used on routes from both Frankfurt and Munich. The aircraft will primarily replace existing aircraft in the fleet. Lufthansa also has an option for another 30 aircraft. The Airbus A350 represents a great saving in fuel consumption; the Airbus A350-900 will, according to Lufthansa, consume 2.9 litres of kerosene per passenger per 100km, which means 25 percent less than the current long-haul aircraft. In addition, noise will be reduced by up to 30 percent. Lufthansa has so far not given any information about the configuration on board, but, according to Airbus, no airline has currently chosen to order the Airbus A350 with first class on board, so this should include Lufthansa. Lufthansa is currently Airbus's largest customer and during the next few years they will implement plans to only fly Airbus aircraft on short-haul routes in Europe.
