Lufthansa has officially introduced direct flights between Frankfurt and San Jose, California, strengthening its presence on the U.S. West Coast and expanding premium transatlantic travel options. This move follows British Airways’ earlier launch of nonstop connections between London Heathrow and San Jose.
Flight LH488 departed Frankfurt International Airport this morning, bound for the heart of Silicon Valley—San José, a global hub for technology and innovation.
Operating on an Airbus A340-300, the route accommodates 298 guests across three cabins: 18 Business Class, 19 Premium Economy, and 261 Economy seats. Lufthansa’s signature cabins—refreshed as part of an extensive fleet-wide upgrade—feature the modern Business Class suite in a distinctive “V” configuration, allowing travelers to recline or sleep fully flat (up to 198cm) while facing forward. High-speed FlyNet Wi-Fi is available throughout the flight, supporting productivity and entertainment needs.
Juergen Siebenrock, Vice President of the Americas for Lufthansa Group, remarked, “San Jose represents a dynamic and rapidly growing aviation market. With the area’s flourishing technology sector and entrepreneurial spirit, it was a natural fit to expand our California footprint beyond our established San Francisco service. Travelers from this new gateway can expect our renowned hospitality, including the enhanced Premium Economy Class—offering 50% more personal space, greater seat width, and an elevated onboard experience.”
Innovation is at the forefront of this route, with Lufthansa introducing its acclaimed “FlyingLab” concept. Passengers can experience cutting-edge technology demonstrations onboard. Outbound flights focus on “Virtual Reality,” giving guests the opportunity to trial Samsung’s latest VR headsets and Galaxy Tab S2 tablets.
On return journeys, the theme shifts to “Wellbeing on Overnight Flights,” where travelers can sample advanced sleep technology such as the Neuroon AI-powered mask, designed to optimize rest and adapt circadian rhythms for long-haul travel.
Dr Reinhold Huber, Vice President Passenger Experience Design & Ancillaries at Deutsche Lufthansa AG, explains: “The FlyingLab enables us to bring innovation directly to our guests and gather valuable feedback rapidly. This agile approach helps us identify products that truly resonate with our premium clientele, bypassing lengthy development cycles.”
Lufthansa’s new service operates five times a week—departing Frankfurt on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays at 10:40 AM, with a scheduled arrival in San Jose at 1:40 PM local time after a 12-hour flight. The return leaves San Jose at 3:20 PM, reaching Frankfurt by 11:50 AM the following day.
