Lufthansa is following the trend in Europe by launching a new fare concept for travel within Europe with a new ticket for passengers with only hand luggage.

According to Lufthansa's commercial director Jens Bischof, a third of the passengers travel with only hand luggage and the idea is that the travellers who are price conscious are able to choose additional services as needed. From October 1, there will be three ticket categories for Lufthansa within Europe -

Light

,

Classic

and

Flex

.

Economy Light

is the new ticket that includes only hand luggage. It will be sold from 89 euros return. To purchase checked baggage costs from 15 euros depending on flight length, and it is also possible to reserve a seat in advance from 10 euros, again depending on flight length. The other two ticket types,

Classic

and

Flex

, include a baggage allowance of 23 kg and Flex also includes free rebooking of tickets, free seat pre-booking and 50% more points in Miles & More. No changes are being made on board, however, and snacks and drinks are still included in Light. A change in business class is also taking place. All Lufthansa’s business class tickets within Europe are now fully flexible with regards to rebooking and cancellation. A condition of rebooking is that there is availability in the booking class of the original ticket, but it will also be possible to pay the difference in order to book a higher class where there is availability. The new price concept is also being introduced at Austrian Airlines and is already in use at Swiss. The tickets are available from the end of July for travel from October 1. The changes apply only within Europe and do not affect intercontinental travel. Jens Bischof, Member of the Lufthansa German Airlines Board and Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) of Deutsche Lufthansa AG, commented: “It is the wish of many customers to only pay for the services they actually make use of. With this new fare concept, we are doing just that. In the future, given this flexibility, every passenger will be able to individually create a tailor-made flight with the various service components that we are offering."
